Nitto if you are going with silver components, Thomson if you are going with black (could get silver too). CKT if you are going for straight up style, or you actually a track sprinter, if the bike rarely sees the track a CKT is worthless besides the style factor.

I personally use the Thomson Elite MTB stem, and have been pleased, although mine is a hair too long for me.

xthugmurderx 09-24-06 09:44 AM

oh, i didn't see who started this thread...matt..i gots me a bontrager and it works just fine, and it looks pretty good too...i know you...they're pretty cheap, i got mine on ebay for around $20.

schooner 09-24-06 09:45 AM

I have seen some sexy Cinelli Grammos on eBay but they are all 1".

xthugmurderx 09-24-06 09:54 AM

it's 1"

freebird 09-24-06 10:00 AM

xthugmurderx 09-24-06 10:03 AM

There one that goes deeper than that? What is the exact amount of drop on that?

LóFarkas 09-24-06 10:27 AM

There are crazy high rise stems that you can flip over to get even more drop than this one has. Some have no or removable decals. None of them are featherlight bling stems, though.

iloveboston 09-24-06 10:34 AM

cant go wrong with a thomson

absntr 09-24-06 10:47 AM

+1 on the Salsa SUL.

Fugazi Dave 09-24-06 10:54 AM

Deda makes a number of extremely sexy threadless stems. I've got a Deda Zero on the Basso that looks übersexy.

it's a 35 degree, and the shape is sexy...most cheap high rise flipped stem are hideous..won't get into it...but don't do it...it sucks, and these things aren't THAT expensive...but they don't come in 31.7..lame.

visitordesign 09-24-06 05:15 PM

for 31.7, there's deda's track stem. similar drop on it. pretty pricey though.

kelly is in the process of going out of business. they had a yard sale over the weekend. I wouldn't order anything from their website.

the salsa SUL cromoly are very similar

my vote goes to thomson.

Learn_not2burn 09-24-06 05:30 PM

yamaguchi ... I haven't seen anyone with a yama stem yet. Don't get the CKT, then we'll have another thread about why your back hurts if you actually ride in the drops.

eyefloater 09-24-06 05:36 PM

The whole, "Well, it looks fast" thing it getting old. Just use a stem that actually gives you a decent bike fit.

DoshKel 09-24-06 05:43 PM

The CKT wins hands down. And I swear i'm not biased ;).

No but, depending on the angle of your headtube, it really isn't that bad. I've been on a couple 50+ mile rides with it, and nothing really hurts at all (except for my ass :(). I'll be using it for both street and track racing.

The only gripe I have is that it takes too long to get to the US. 18 days for me.

The key is to rotate the bars forward so that they match the angle of the stem. Thats how you really get good fit.

Learn_not2burn 09-24-06 06:33 PM

How often are you riding in the drops?

With a drop stem there is eventually a point where there is a loss of power. Not to mention a loss of control. How much bend is in your arms when you ride in the grips of the drop? Is your back parallel to the ground?
