Just put an aluminium plate under the insole... A thick enough soled shoe all you'd do is lessen the flexibility a bit. Do it man and post the results...

Businessman type shoes with SPD's under... Might catch on for commuters.

I had a pair, I really wish I had'nt pulled the cleat + mounting plate out while trying to skid. I knew better & I miss them.
