I ride these old (80s) campy track pedals i got as hand me downs, and both sets came with some sort of "high quality" european leather straps, which had already been used for years of track use. I' have had them for almsot two years, one year on "road bike use" and on brakeless fixed, there are still in decent shape, despite getting wet, though there get abraded as they tend to rub the crank arm during revolutions, cause i have big feet. Maybe the quality has changed in recent years?
I also dont tighten and losen my straps though, i just have them loose enough to get in and out of.

How did I know that as soon as I said leather straps wear out, 10 people would show up who have been messing in seattle for 4 years on the same straps their dad wore in the '75 paris-roubaix? I really don't care what people run, my real point was that people need to stop thinking that straps made for the track are going to wear well on the street.

Geez, Man. Get with the times. The only place they still use clips 'n' straps is in Europe. 'Course, in Italy they still think leisure suits are cool and I hear disco is all the rage in Spain. Gosh! Does your helmet leave weird patterns in your groovy 'fro, too?
Urok, the Shameless Troll, will now return to his cave. Thank you. I ride nylon, and it's honestly fine. A buddy of mine who's handy carved some strips out of a black rubber bungee strap and LOVES them. good tight feeling, hold him in, but if he gives a nice pull backwards, they'll release. 'Course, he also commutes in Washington D.C. in Red Wing work boots, so YMMV. Good luck.

Think about how little stress is put on them with a road bike, and think about how much less than that track straps are meant to take (less time on the bike, never get wet). If you want to ride brakeless on the street in all kinds of weather, either plan on chewing through a bunch of leather straps, or suck it up and run nylon ones. I know that's not cool, I know that NJS Somanellipistatoshi laminated double cream puffs for $100 a pop are the jizzy jam and everyone will think you're cool and you will get mad play from all the hot ladies that like guys with arcane expensive bike parts (I have confirmed this with both of them) and blah blah woof woof. Come on, do you guys ride in patent leather shoes and silk pants and then complain about your nice shoes getting scuffed and the breeze in your crotch? Everybody and their dog kicks down big bucks for deep V's because they're "way gnar for the street, dude," but then insists on riding around strapped in with the girth off a My Little Pony saddle and wonders why it wears out and breaks. AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGG!!!!!!
ok, I'm done. OP, this rant really isn't directed at you
