Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

it seems like being a hipster or being called a hipster is a bad thing? maybe there are people out there that prefer to be a hipster.

someone here had a quote in another hipster-bashing thread...goes a little something like this...

when it comes to fashion, follow the trend. when it comes to principles, follow yourself.

lyrical, really.

Funny because this picture of Lucklust is about 5 years old. Sort of the pre hipster that the rest of you became.

Go ride your bikes.
Calling out people who you think are trendy because of the bikes they ride or the clothes they bought is 1000x more trendy and pathetic than any ****ing Pista could ever be.

in my experience, hipster is a word used by people involved in white urban youth cultures to deride other people in white SUBURBAN youth cultures, who try to be "urban".

i visited a "shopping mall" in the my parent's suburbs this week. mindblowing.

there's another angle that i often wonder about
what about the fear of being seen as a hipster?

yeah ... yeah ... who cares what "they" think.

but when you pass another rider in the street
and you notice they're riding fixed (don't tell me you dont look)
don't you wonder what it is that they're thinking?

often I find myself "sizing up" the other rider
as if beyond our mutual appreciation of our bikes,
i could somehow understand this stranger, or know what they're about

other times, when met with a "holier than thou" glare, i know
i know that they're looking at me and saying "HIPSTER" or "POSERGER"
they really believe that they're better than me
or that they discovered fixed first

is it so bad to not want that?
is it so bad that i don't like people thinking that I'm in it for the minute?

I love my bike

My guess is that Pista is a 2004. Look at the decals. No white behind the Bianchi or world champ strips. 2003 was grey, 2002-2000 were black.

e.e. cummings at his finest

I dunno, I have the opposite experience, and try to give it to others. Saw a guy locking a red Soma Rush last night, and gave him the old "Nice bike." On the timesup ride, there were a couple of FG/SS riders, and we chatted a little about the conversion process, future plans, etc. It's nice.
