that sounds similar to where we play. Our court has walls on all four sides so you can really play off the walls well. We found a great new court but their are freaking little hockey players play hockey on our newfound 'polo' court, we'll have to remedy that somehow.

What you guys need is a really hard ball, we've been using the hot weather hockey ball this winter so it's rock solid and will bounce off the walls really well, improves the play a lot. Just be careful though, because it's solid as a rock, it'll hurt like hell when you take a shot to the body.... hurt A LOT!!!

I'm bumping this thread cause I'm going to be building up a polo fleet and a bunch of mallets. I've been tossing around ideas for different pole materials. I have my doubts about the availability of used ski poles since I'm in north carolina. Has anyone used broom sticks before -possibly aluminum ones?

Bikes: Various by application

I don' know if it's been mentioned in this thread, but for all you polo players in the world, Toronto is hosting a bike polo tourney in June 2007 BikeWeek. Run by the TOBMA all are welcome to compete. You may even face the dreaded Ottawa crew depending on how the tourney goes.

Dates, are almost but not quite set, Monday should see the dates set for certain. There may (will know on Monday) be a road criterium CIRCLING the play area, so if you want to stretch your legs or just watch people go fast you'd be welcome to race or watch. This will be a "real" event, with fanfare & hoopla, food & vendors (and food vendors I guess) after parties and general mayhem, very likely a related alleycat the night before or the night of. A great play venue too, top notch.

just sayin,

Try lacrosse stick shafts. Come in a ton of materials and all are pretty light.

WOWiE

why didn't i think of this before! what a great idea!
the ski poles we are using now (for the new batch) have so far turned out great

but everytime i drill the tubing for the cross bolt, i think to myself,
"yeh it's only a matter of time until Gil breaks this"

I would be very interested to see the results of a build with a lacross stick

unfortunately, i don't think your going to find a used stick for anything under 10
and if you're going to spend that much (plus materials) you should probably just cough up the extra $$$ for a real mallet. they're only 20 or so.

the mallets made from ski poles are coming in around $4-5 bucks a piece
and IMHO rockor my sockor

I hope you lot have your mallet construction methods and materials of choice nailed down (hah, pun champion!) because in NINE short days, it is ON. East Coast Polo Invitational. 27-29.April, New York Goddamn City.

This is the fourth (and last) thread I've spammed with this today, so I hope everyone who cares is getting the message...

Bring your mallets, your bikes, and your testicles (you too, ladies) and join us for an epic weekend of polo, partying, debauchery, and overall fun. Opening night party Friday night, tournament begins EXACTLY at 10.00h on Saturday. That means the 3, 2, 1, GO! countdown begins at 09.59.57. I am serious, damnit!

So come on, come on. Let's go and mash **** up. Game on mother****ers!!!

Lacrosse sticks would probably be interesting, and especially in the DC area you could more than likely find cheap ones at one of those used sporting goods shops on the cheap. The shafts are MEANT for hard contact, whereas golf clubs aren't. More surface area to bolt on as well.

nice!

I gotta say (and anyone who witnessed DC's murder in the ESPI will tell you) we need some practice.
Them boys were good.

Another thing we noticed was that our mallets were waaaaaay overbuilt.

Keep it simple people. The lighter the better.

I had this great ******** black doom mallet built up, and the thing was like swinging a sledgehammer.

No photos tho
