Bikes: so many

It's ridiculous how much waste the average American produces, and what's worse is that a large percentage of what goes into landfill could still be used. It's easier to throw away that old bike or lawnmower than fix it, even if fixing it means new tires or a spark plug. I think one could make a decent living fixing bikes, lawn mowers and appliances found in the trash and scavenging copper and aluminum. I think you could do pretty well on scrap alone.

It's illegal in most places, but rarely enforced. If you drive around with a big truck and trailer, you may get harassed but otherwise you should be fine.

A little, depends on the dumpster. I generally stay out of really icky dumpsters.

Not to me, YMMV.

Yes, but again it depends on the dumpster.

i found an eames chair in the trash once and sold it for $450+
it was only a few blocks away from my house so i just rolled it home...

i've made it a tradition to use at least one garbage-picked part on each of my bikes

Both of my grandfathers regularly took stuff out of the trash when they were retired. They were the sceniest kids in the whole scene, may they both rest in peace.

Yeah....about that Ti frame. Downtube was trashed - someone drove into the garage with the bike on their roof rack. I'd have repaired it and ridden it myself, but funds were not permitting so I sold it on eBay for a tidy profit. Same day I pulled out an old, early-90s Trek OCLV road fork in perfect condition, some bar ends, and a set of pedals. I often pull out tacoed wheels that I cut the hubs out of - most are of decent quality, just needing bearing work. I have a box full of hubs now that I have no idea what to do with. As for tires, the shop in question slashes every ****ing tire they throw away so people can't scavenge them. WTF? Once in a while I'll find a low-end Bontrager 700c tire that isn't slashed, but other than that everything usable is pretty much wasted by the knife.

Beats the hell out of me. Liability? A world-hating employee or manager that detests the thought of anyone getting a tire for free.

yes but he was never convicted as committing the murder, just ordering it. he never physically killed anyone. I think it's weird that you can put someone in jail because someone is dumb enough to do the things that they tell them to do. kind of like putting judas priest on trial because those kids killed themselves, oh personal responsibility, what happened to you?
