Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I might have found a match. To my eyes this this has the same lugs, fork and seatstay caps. Can't really say anything about chainstay since there's no picture from drivetrain side. So to me it seems like it could be Gitane Kilo from around 1984 built with vitus tubing.

I'm not regretting buying it and paying the price I did anymore, I just sometimes get hit by a bit of a panic just after buying. Especially in cases like this where there really isn't that much information to go by and I'm parting with large sums (to a poor student like me).

Also I think differences in price levels and availability affect the perspective somewhat on things like this. For example the only cheap off the shelf fixed gear bike available over here is Bianchi Pista and I think that it has a price tag of 650€ (which is about $850 I guess). Then again if I chose to import from outside europe I would get hit with hefty shipping, tax and import costs. I considered hopping in on the BFSSFG Iro deal but that would have cost over 250€ and would have included a few months of waiting.

Right now I'm quite content

2 things

1)the frame looks great
2)I think you should want a brake on your first fixed bike. If you'll take it easy and ride like my grandpa, more power to you.

I'm currently looking at the possibility of getting a drilled fork to use at first, riding brakeless is certainly intimidating. In case I won't find one I'll propably just ride around empty parking lots and quiet bike paths most of the summer. I'm not in any kind of hurry to hit the streets.

Roberto Medeiros is THE track bike guy on UK eBay. I don't know where he gets his stuff from, but he always has lots, and his prices, whilst seldom bargains, always seem fair.

You just have to find the right deals. I just got a repainted Eddy Merckx with full Campy Record (apart from the headset) for about £120 recently.

Edit: by the way Yuhoshi, where are you in Finland? My girlfriend is Finnish and I saw a few fixed gears when I was in Helsinki.

I'm in Espoo, which is right next to Helsinki. I don't know anyone in person riding fixed but there seems to be fixie scene for sure. You can check out https://www.bc-hellsinki.com/ if you're interested.

good luck with your bike, Yuhoshi. Your frame certainly looks better than this late-70's Gitane I found in the trash. I gave it to one of the wrenches at the LBS so he could build his own fixie.

So was that kind of cutout used by someone? To me it looks quite similar to early 80s Gitanes but I'm not really an expert on frames.

Don't worry, I'm not that fond of the whole riser trend. I'll most likely use drops or possibly bullhorns.

The central cut out is reasonably common on european frames from the 70s and 80s. The harp comment is unlikely to be completely serious.

Have fun building it up - I guess you have a little while to go before you'll be doing much riding outside.

Ah okay, sometimes a bit hard to recognize jokes in written form in non-native language.
