Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Can I put a single freewheel on a fixed hub?

Can I put a single speed freewheel on a fixed gear only track hub? Anybody have experience doing this?

Thanks,

Mr_macgee

PS: On the Sheldon Brown's website, it says I can but I've never heard of this before.

"Any standard track hub can also be used with a single-speed freewheel just by leaving the lockring off. The thread is the same. Sometimes people worry because the hub thread isn't as deep as a freewheel specific hub, but this is never a problem with a single-speed freewheel."

yes it can be done.

just like old 5 or 6 speed road hubs. you can put track cogs on it , most 3/32 for road use.

Yes, but be careful. Track threads were not designed to take large amounts of torque. So if you plan on using a small gear ratio to schlep up steel hills, it's easy to strip the track threads because there are fewer of them. Then your flip flop hub won't flip (or flop) anymore. Disclaimer: This could just be an issue with cheap hubs and freewheels.

I've never seen this happen, but maybe I'm not using cheap enough parts.
