a quick question for the pros. at what point in the bag construction do you add the pockets? do you add them once the main bag form is complete? or before you make the bag form? im just curious because i added my pockets after the main bag was done and i found it difficult to maneuver around the sewing machine. thanks for the help!

definitly not a pro...
But I add my pockets first, a lot easier that way. Also if your doing a floating liner type design it's really the only way I can think of because if you waited till the bag was all put together, you would be sewing through the liner.

So, I have a pattern idea in my head (I mean, a mess bag is a pretty simple bag design), but how do you guys go about attaching straps? I'm wondering how to add that to the design.

For me, the strap is the last thing. But, it depends on the shape/cut of the bag. What design do you have? Also, i have this new buckle that i am dying to show you guys. It's amazing. Not as big as the cam buckle, but really easy to adjust. I will snap some pics and post it as soon as i get the chance.

FlippingHades, what is the reflective material used in that pic and where can I get some? I'm not a bag maker, but would love to be able to sew that stuff on to some of my gear.
I've seen a few sites that carry different types of reflective tape and fabric but can never decide which would work best.
Thanks

I have a Push bag. I've been using it daily for about 4 months now, and I absolutely love it. It's gotten me through all the snow and slush days without a drop of water in the main compartment. And it's comfortable, and made by someone local (Toronto).

What do you guys do for the velcro? I have tried using the adhesive stuff then tried to stitch around the edges to attach it to the bag but it seems the glue they use always gums up my machine. I've resorted to hand stitching all the velcro on which works fine, it's just time consuming. I was just wondering; are there ways around this or are there any techniques or tips I'm overlooking?
