Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Old style freewheel work with fixed cog?

I have a beat up junker with rear wheel bolt/nut freewheel hub. Will a gear/cog and lock ring convert it for fixie use?

You can find a multitude of opinions and information by searching for suicide hub.

Summary and personal experience:
It will work. Use loctite and a brake. Don't do anything crazy.

stripping a suicide hub is really easy. track lockrings don't work but bottom bracket lockrings do.

i'd do it if you want to try fixed for a first time but otherwise i'd just avoid it.

If you go suicide you're be better off with a rear brake in addition to a front. I'm converting my friend's bike to suicide fixie temporarily until he buys a track hub, and we're going to leave the rear brake on.

my fixed-four-20-years freehub begs to differ.
