Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

how about you send them to me? that way you won't have to weigh down you sinful soul with the dilemma of being honest. you will also be paying it forward, as i'll get some nice wheels out of it. sure you'll be assed out of wheels, but you'll score double points with the Man upstairs. you're welcome for my sage advice.

All you people talking about karma as if you actually believe in it are making me sad.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karma

It's taken to be more philosophical than magical/religious by most, and if you really think about it simply logically there is a direct series of connections that in effect are karma at work. This kid gets Deep V's, the kid who ordered Deep V's gets the Wienmann, or the guy who shipped out the wrong wheels pays out of pocket to fix the mistake. Don't act like there is no cause and effect.

I ordered about $300 of cycling DVDs and the went missing in the post. The guys I bought them from sent another lot without question. About 2 months later the original order turned up. I contacted the seller and they said "thanks for your honesty... keep them".

Damn... I wanted to see what sort of punishment God was going to throw your way! Those rims wouldn't have seemed so light with all that guilt hanging off them!! You did the right thing... the 'fixed' thing!

Many people use the term 'karma' as a short-hand for 'cause and effect'. It doesn't automatically make them Hindu mystics.

I see it as living by a standard that is more satisfying and worthwhile than selfishness.

Karma is very misunderstood in America, it is rarely used in the correct context.

Agreed I don't fully understand the Buddhist and Hindu meanings of Karma, but I like to think of it in a much larger context than what goes around comes around, or if you do bad, bad stuff will happen to you etc. I think of it more in terms of what you put out in the world goes into the cycle. Not physical cause and effect as much as bad feeds bad, good feeds good. It's the whole Yin Yyang thing, this constant cycle two parts of the same whole, constantly at odds, and yet depending upon each other for their mutual existence, and as each pushes against the other they keep the cycle going. Of course characterising Yin and Yang as "good and bad" is part of the western misunderstanding. Especially to think of them as either or, as opposed to parts of the same whole.

are you saying that talking about karma makes you sad because you don't believe in it, or that you do believe in it, and other people misunderstanding it makes you sad?

What goes around, goes around, goes around comes all the way back around. (But is not necessarily representative of the concept of karma.)

i ordered a wheelset from the bicyclewheels.com guys about a year ago and they sent me two wheelsets by accident - when i called to let them know, the poor guy on the other end sounded pretty damn thankful to know what happened to "the missing wheels" - they paid for shipping back and i definitely felt better than i would have just keeping them. glad things worked out for you too...

edit: on the other hand, that time bens cyclery sent me some extra ****...
