Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: I own an older Giant Rincon and an 05 Giant OCR2

I ride a ss almost exclusively when I am not at work, I do bicycle delivery for a sub shop. But I do ride a geared road bike for work. I find that when I am riding my ss my cycling skills become better when I am delivering. I also tend to think that these subsets are kind of silly I have a road bike, two mountain bikes, and two single speeds and they are all alot of fun.

So I left my bike at home this morning and opted for the public transit system instead, as my new fixed gear was scheduled to arrive today. Obviously, I did not want to be stuck at the office with two bikes and no one to ride the other. Anyway, long (and frustrating) story short, the bike didn't come so I was stuck riding the train home. Well, about 10 minutes into the commute, a guy a few seats behind me appears to pass out... didn't think much of it til someone says, "I think he's dead.OMG he's dead!" UTTER CHAOS breaks out. And me, being the ****ty person that I am, think "Damn, I really should've just ridden my bike."

So when I read this quote I couldn't help but chuckle. I guess I'll be seeing some of you in hell.

Bikes: BMC SL01, XtC, Rhythm GX and a frankenstein avalanche 2.0

I love training on a one-geared machine on the course of an upcoming race (if the hills allow it) because the climbing in the one gear makes me F=L=Y when the race comes. I find the best deadspot training of all is taking a mtb, or even better, ss mtb, up a loose, long climb. If you don't apply your power evenly through the whole pedal stroke, power=gone.

a friend of mine is a serious roadie, rides for a team and the whole 9 yards. Last year she did one of her races, she flipped the wheel on her converted univega and she won. admittedly, at the time she was training super hard and probably could have won on a unicycle.

Me and two other friends ride fixed for road rides. We do 40-50 mile rides occasionally. Its tough but makes a really good workout.

awesome dude. www.dcfixed.com is a good place to do that. we're not all/only fixed riders and most of us are super friendly. i'm john on that board.

right now my only true ss is my cyclocross bike, we try to do cross practices every other monday or so. we'l also have a team in the fall, and are looking for racers.

we also do all sorts of other rides at all levels, it's a lot of fun.

cheers

Bikes: vintage Raleigh

Yup, single speed road rider here. In fact, it is my only bike and a new one at that. I used to race off-road SS and stoped racing about 2 years ago. haven't had gears on my mtb for the last 3 years of racing. Now that I'm not racing mtb I just ride the road. So, I sold my mtb (funds were tight) and purchased a new geared road bike. When selecting this ride, I was looking for a good frame and fork with descent wheels and didn't care about the groupo. I ended up with a Kinesis frame with carbon fork and a 105 groupo. The very first thing I did before even going on my first ride with it was strip the gears and shifters, put on new brake only levers that I purchased at the same time as the bike, removed the double chainrings; replaced with a 42 single ring, removed the cog cluster and spaced out for the 17t single cog, and added a chain tensioner. I have been riding nothing but that going on the bikes second season. I was originally looking for a fixed track bike to convert to ss but found a very good deal on a geared bike so went with it. Besides the track geometries may have been a bit steep for long road rides. The area I live in is very hilly so the gearing gives me a tough workout for climbs and helps with my spin on the flats. I like it.
