I wonder about that SL. the lightening is mostly in the sideplates. I wonder if it's still as strong as the regular 710.

yeah, the side plates are holey as sin. I read up on BMX sites and no one seems to be complaining about it, and it is super light. We'll see. I'll update the thread if anything shady happens!

Of course, buy a Connex Super Heavy Duty and you're frame may break before your chain does. I've got a nastified one in a baggie on my workbench that's needed degreasing/cleaning for at least a year. Over 1,000 miles on it, no signs of wear or stretch.

KMC KOOL SL are good for street use. Wipperman 1G8 make a great sprint chain, though they are the heaviest I have held. I am currently running an Izumi Eco and that is performing fine.

All my LBS has is PC-1s, and they want $18 for em. so I ordered a KMC K710SL from AEbike for $16. It seemed like the general consensus was anything from KMC would be decent, and the cost difference between a 510, and 710sl were just not that significant. Too bad I sorta wanted the "Super Toughness" but 55 more bucks didn't seem worth it to have toughness in the name.

I've been using the KMC Kool for awhile now. My favorite chain ever. I've had my current one for around a year I believe, and it still has a lot of life left in it.

Looks cool too.

I dished out the extra cash for the super toughness and I'm happy with it so far. It's super quiet too...can't hear a peep. I still need to take that screw link off though...just don't trust it.

Yeah and they spell Cool with a K which is almost as badass as "Super Toughness". Almost...

When it comes to a chain on the fixie, this is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT component to safety and I can easily justify spending $50 for a chain, when its durability and strength needs to be uncompromising. Whether it's the Super Tough Izumi or a Wipperman, when it comes to chains which are not high profit margin items, you are getting what you paid for in terms of material quality. Getting the "strongest" model from KMC, Wipperman or Izumi is a win-win situation. $50 on a crucial piece of the drivetrain/braking mechanism is not like spending $50 on a bunch of Ti bolts; this is not an optional luxury but an integral part of the bike.

Out of curiosity, how much you ride in a year?
I tend to stretch out KMC 510HX's in about 2000km.

The KMC Kool khain is the koolist...
But really, have had mine for a few weeks and no stretch yet after riding it everyday.
It is really burley.

I reported it here, 't was long time ago. tried to search for the image but in vain.
I put the blame on the chain elongation at that time, the chain was thrown from the chainring, caught the pedal, wound on itself on the cog and "rotacut" through the track end while bending the cranks. I managed to stay upright with rear wheel in the air but I had to replace the track ends and pedals.
/end thread hijack

Not entirely sure of specific numbers... but I ride a lot. I commute everywhere, participate in races, lollygag and so on. On my bike almost everyday for sure.

Not sure i've ever seen the 510HX, unless it has a different name and that is just the factory label.

With an expensive Izumi super toughness chain you are mostly paying for the NJS stamp, not increased strength or durability. There is very little difference in materials or strength, if any at all and in my experience Izumi chains are louder, more problematic, and wear faster than KMC BMX chains. Unless you can leg press the weight of a car, you are not strong enough to break a chain with your own brute strength. Mountain bikes with a tiny granny ring will exert way more tension on skinny deraileur chain then you could ever apply on a normally geared fixed gear or singlespeed. Chain breakage happens from improper installation, F'ed up chainline, worn out drive chain components or other random accidents.

While I do agree with the above points, in general, I would like to note that most of the nicer track chains available out there (HKK, etc) are certainly made to finer tolerances and standards of finish than the less expensive chains available. A side-by-side comparison makes the differences quite obvious.

+1

I find the Kool chain to be a little smoother / quieter than the KMC Z chain and it's burley as hell to boot. Not too spendy either.
