Just curious, as there seems to be a divergence here.

Both for me. I'll take a small drop in performance for pretties, but I will also take a drop in aesthetics if it is for significantly better performance. I like my **** to look good and I'm not racing, so small drops in performance don't matter all that much to me, but I do want my bike to work effeciently.

I think we are all guilty of picking form over function from time to time: we all want a bike that looks good. However, I personally feel that when aesthetics interfere with safety or cause severe discomfort, then some line has been crossed. My bike might look a lot better without breaks and a rack, but then I would have trouble stopping myself and the loads of crap I have to carry in my panniers for work. And never forget that the only person who really cares what your bike looks like is you!

If you saw my bike you'd know I chose function over form, actually either the fixed or the geared roadie for that matter. Kind of ugly, but super functional.

My first response would be neither. Fitness is more important.

My second response would be Minimalism, which for a single speed/fixed gear serves both form and function.

Especially with fixed gear bikes, form and function do not seem to be mutually exclusive. When you add gears and derraillers and cables then they start to diverge.

Ultimately function is king, but few of us want something that lacks attractive form. Ideally, you get both.

I try to find a balance with more emphasis on function. I mean, if I can't use it, it doesn't matter what it looks like.

But seriously, the poll should be aesthetics vs. function, since form is whatever the choices of aesthetics or function end up creating.

Function. My bikes are for riding, not a fashion statement.
