I followed the directions, sprayed 15 inches away, and waited 30 min between coats. I did 3 coats. When I went to check on the frame and fork this morning, the fork looks fine but the frame looks like a glazed doughnut with a white speks all over it. The frame was dry to the touch so I look a clean towel and tried rubbing the white residue off the frame; it came off in some spots but not others. I had to leave for work so i only had a few minutes to try to fix it.

What did I do wrong? Any way to remove this white crap without further screwing up the paintjob? Any suggestions would be appreciated

Don't panic!! It's not ruined. I had the same issue with a rattlecan job i did. You need to sand it with extremely light sandpaper--like 1000 grit. Or even a kitchen scouring pad used lightly will do it. Be gentle though. Even if you left it alone, that 'glazing' will sort of smooth out over time.

Question: did you sand between coats?

doofo 07-20-07 05:28 PM

uh oh

drama in the build thread again!

dwainedibbly 07-21-07 06:04 AM

Anybody else catch the Nashbar carbon fork sale while the 20% off coupon was active? I got one for $59.99. It's over a pound lighter than the IRO fork. I'm not usually a weight weenie, but a pound for $60? Yeah, I'll take that deal.

(I know. After the steerer is cut the steel fork will lose more weight than the carbon/aluminum fork since steel is being removed from one vs aluminum on the other. Still, it'll be a big difference.)

freeskihp 07-21-07 10:20 AM

i love the look of the stock fork but the weight is definitely noticeable, granted I have deep vees on there. I would love to be able to find somthing that looks similar (think bareknuckle fork but threaded)

chunts 07-21-07 11:00 AM

yeah for what it's worth I'm tall enough that I only ended up cutting like an inch from the steerer tube. not much weight savings.

fibergoldfish 07-21-07 11:52 AM

yeah i had some dude offer me 350 for the one i had for my ex....I took that deal

Seatpost Clamp / Collar Diameter

I know this was covered in afew posts in the e-mail thread but i figure i'd just post it here.

For those of you who didn't get a seatpost collar or clamp, a Salsa 30mm Liplock Clamp fits perfectly.

It was one of my first parts to arrive. :D (so far i've got hubs, bartape and the seatpost clamp. most of everything else will arrive next week.)

she is a dream to ride.. could not be more happy.. I really like the wonky dimension stem w/ the cheap road drops.. it lets me be more up right like risers.. but i can get a little lower when needed

i also ran out of money. .so i did not put a break on.. and you know what? i really enjoy riding it that way. . i tend to keep my bike under control more, and i feel that i really pay more attention to whats going on around me

all in all, a GREAT step up from my schwinn super le tour conversion i've beat on for a year and a half

anywho here is the 'parts list' sorta fancy.. but sorta not. a half and half bike if you will

iro 'special edition' 56cm blue frame
Open Sport rim laced to 36h formula flip/flop hub (rear)
Open Pro rim laced to 32h shimano ultrega hub (front)
Dura-ace 16tooth cog
shimano 16tooth free wheel on the other side
panaracer 28' t-serv (pretty nice bomb-proof tire)(28 + city = ftw)
miche primato pista cranks w/47 tooth chainring
mks gr9 pedals with mks size L clips
Chris King headset
Dimension mountain bike stem (110mm)
used and sorta dented no name seat post (next item to be replaced)
and used nitto 38mm road drops
specialized pro-race mountain bike seat.. i love the one one my hardrock sooo much i keep putting them on my road bikes.. oh well

sometime in the future i want miche hubs, and maybe, just maybe a less riser-ish stem ;) ;) heh

thats it.. built her up nice..didn't break the bank... love the ride! love the frame fit. totally happy camper

thanks iro ;)

badevilcow 07-22-07 10:33 AM

nice! i really like them black frames there.. i sorta wish i got black.. but i freaking love my blue.. it's pretty not sleek..

Nice to see some builds using silver components.

My green frame is at the LBS getting prepped. I'm going for the "Last to be Built" award, it seems.

all i need is a wheelset+tires and a stem though.

Igneous Faction 07-22-07 08:38 PM

Bosox:

What tires are you running? I'm looking for some good, classic tires.
