Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

SE Draft

I am interested in getting my girlfriend a single speed. I saw an SE Draft at the LBS on sale for $200. (https://www.sebmx.com/2007/bike-detail.asp?id=19) Does anyone have any experience with this bike? Will it hold up problem free for a daily commuter. She is trying to spend as little as possible. If there are any other single speed (i doubt she will ever want to ride fixed) suggestions that would be great.

It looks pretty crappy, and I doubt it will be problem free for long. Frankly, you get what you pay for. few people on here have had luck with the bikesdirect.com, if you're going budget.

Have you thought about building her a bike from an old road bike? Could be cheaper and more fun.

That said, there's not that much that could go wrong on that bike. So, maybe the brakes suck, and it's probably pretty heavy (it's made of Hi-Ten). Get the wheels trued up to perfection and the brakes adjusted as best you can, you both should be good.

It's not like you've got a hub that could strip...

that bike's a total piece. if you go with se, get a lager. it's about twice as much, but you might be able to get it on sale. its a much improved cheap bike.

I own a Draft. I'm a muscular, 210 lb 6' man. Even I find it heavy. I would not recommend this for a woman.

Bikes: Sngl Spd's, 70's- 80's vintage, D-tube Folder

Its made by Fuji.
Its not that bad especially for 200.00
Ive seen them go for 179.00, even.
Its supercheep mainly because of the ashtabula crank.
If it had tREK decals on it, the msrp would be 349.00
and people would be saying "great utility bike......"

People don't like this thing because it's ****ing hi-ten steel, which provides for a poor ride, weighs a ton, and is generally cheap.

Basically, this is the Huffy of fixed gear bikes (and I don't mean the fancy Serotta Huffys, either!).

Bikes: Too Many

I just rode one yesterday and was surprised how heavy it was and the stock brakes suck. If you get one, get new pads asap.
