Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? And it still stands that they are essentially a less functional bullhorn, and he was just happy that he made it himself. Fine with me if it i makes him happy, but there is no way it would make sense as a an actual product, or even make sense to pay someone else to build a "proper" one.

He even said himself that the charm was he did it himself, not that he made a mockup.
In this situation I would pay a motorcycle shop with a pipe bender and a good welder to make these bars.

Bikes: Giant TCR2, Giant TCX, IRO BFSSFG SE, Salsa Casseroll, IRO Rob Roy.

Here's my take:

Looks kinda like mustache bars + bullhorns. Very cool.

I mean, yeah, it's not the greatest looking, but the concept isn't bad at all.

let me guess, you chose copper cause it was easy to bend like that?

Maybe something you should reconsider.

He only used copper for the bar shim. Still risky, but at least less risky.

Dude, those bars are great!

They're like somethink the guys at Orange County Choppers would fabricate.

Just clean them up a bit (i.e.-paint them all black or something, bar plug the gapping holes) and ride on my good man!

I like it. Assuming the bmx bar isn't compromised by all that rust (throw some oil inside, as it'll collect rain) it should be pretty sturdy. Copper is fine for the shim, where it's ductility will not be a problem.

Actually, what i think would be even better would be to cut the bmx bar a little higher, and have a second set of normal bullhorns coming off above the faux road drops- it'd give you a narrow and a wide hand position.

Bikes: Gary Fisher Mullet, Centurian Le Mans, a stripped Schwin, some random frames and parts.

I think if you had capped the BMX bar section, taped them up completely, and said 'check out this bars I got' then you wouldn't be catching any flack. I think they look pretty cool and as long as you feel it benefits your ride in some way, then it's awesome. As far as being dangerous or sketchy; As long as everything is tight and you keep a close eye on that shim, you're probably doing fine.

I had a neat cob job handlebar lashup on my bike once. Thirty years later, I still have the ugly scar on my leg, running from just below my sack to above my knee. Stem snapped, I went over the front with the jagged metal ripping my thigh open. I think it was somewhere in the ballpark of 4-500 stitches to close it all up.

I made these before copper prices skyrocketed, I wanted something cheap, now I can't lock this bike up anywhere.

Those bars are awesome.

It's a almost a shame that the bars are on a fixed gear.

When I look at this I want to take to the next level by cramming some bar end shifters into the ends of the cut off bmx bars. Sort of like little ears or antenna for the bike.

The idea of using copper as the shim material seems; well... unsafe to me.

Those homebuilt bars look just fine to me. I don't see a need to hate on them.

The op's bars are ghettotastic. I love stuff like that. And they look comfortable to boot.

These are remarkably similar to the customized bars on Shino's bike (fastest japanese messenger, perhaps the fastest in the world.)
