bmx brakes on a fixie?

sorry if this is stupid or has already been addressed...
i guess im just wondering because a bmx tire is obviously wider than a road tire...
will it fit/work?

Yea, pretty sure they would be too wide. I ran a bmx lever hooked into some road brakes with flatbars on my first fixie though. Worked great.

i used a bmx lever and that was great, and way cheaper/heavier than cross levers.

the brake itself might be too wide and beefy. get a road brake.

I would agree that it would depend on the brake, for sure. I remember having a diacompe on my old bmx bike that probably could have been made to work on a roadie.

That said, you could probably find a used brake that would actually be made for the job for quite cheap.

I use one. Works well when you're running 700c tires on a frame built for 27 inchers. To wit:

i got them when they were like 50-70% off so they were really cheap... dual pivot, short reach(probably won't fit fenders or tires bigger than 28c) and use shamino slideout replacement pads. they adjust well and with better pads, brake like the dickens.

i'm sure you could color the silver hardware black if you wanted.

for something like 40 bucks shipped these were a killer deal. just scrape off the n logo and people will swear they're uber sick. they're not lightweight but they're not heavy by any means. the site says 173 grams.

they're 30 bucks right now.

compare that to a shamino 105 front lever that's 185g.

however, that's black as well and is only ten bucks on nashbar right now.

Bikes: Rustbuckets, the lot of them.

The biggest compatibility issue may be reach rather than heaviness or width. The shoes may be too far from the bolt for may road bikes. Another thing, presuming sidepulls, is to use a lever designed for the right amount of leverage. Levers made for canti/V brakes have different mechanical advantage and may perform poorly with sidepulls.

Those are just rebranded Tektros, which are knockoffs of Shimanos. $40 shipped is far from a killer deal, in fact that's what the brakeset often runs for in stores (actually only $35 at my overpriceverything LBS).

I'd rather have bought the 105 brake thats only $10 personally.

Bikes: bfssfg iro--black.

why would you want to show off your brake?

take it off if you're really trying to be flashy and hip.

anyway. paint works for colors.

Bikes: Two old old road bikes (unsure of brand), my old Giant Iguana mountain bike, and my Mercier fixed

you know, I picked up an old BMX brake just for the hell of it like two weeks ago (I can't say no to random bike part at the thrift store for $1) and just threw it in my parts pile. When I get home from work I will try to mount it real quick like. It looks pretty much identical to the yellow one you posted. Just red.

Old school bmx brakes arent all the same. Brand typically paralleled quality then as it does now.
On ebay you can find a lot of old Dia-compe bmx brakes. Dia Compe pretty much ruled it back then. DiaCompe Nippons look/works nice and came in tons of colors.
