Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Where do you stand

answer the poll

Bike Messenger - you are the professional - (dispatchers, retired and between jobs mess apply)

Bike Geek - you are usually a jobless minor or a bike shop employee

Cool/ Hip Bike rider - dare I say hipster you ride bikes because they are fun functional
cheap fashion that get chics almost as well as a flashy car

Cyclist - your competitive nature is all business you are the alpha dog and you wear the spandex and attitude to prove it

I consider myself a bike geek. I am not jobless, nor a minor but it seemed the best fit. I do not compete much, hipsters hate me more than they hate other hipsters, and I am not a messanger. I do love to ride around, talk about bikes, and [when i have to] work on bikes.

None of the above.

Pretty limited options. Apparently nobody commutes by bike where you live.

bike geek more than likely

my brief descriptions are for the unimaginative minds they are extreme and short examples of each category common sense is always good to go by

the title is self explanatory but the added description is to say these apply even though you think they don't

i.e. who woulda thought messengers / dispatchers are the same category? and yeah I have a particularly bleak view of a wide majority of bike geeks

Agreed. My idea of a bike geek is somebody who has been around bikes for decades and has a wealth of knowledge or a college kid (often mechanical engineer) who hands down loves bikes and has researched he hell out of the technical aspects of biking. Or somewhere inbetween. Bike geeks can easily fall into any other category of biker.

Bike Messenger (between jobs - retired - both apply)
Is this profession so desirable that it gives you a benefit that I only know exists for a president? Once president, always referred to as President so-and-so. Once a bike messenger, you can forever claim that's what you are?

There's a market? Do I need to do something to get actively traded?
