I understand that vinyl is cumbersome, but come on, a laptop and a couple Ipods is by no means Djing, any body can get up there and hit a bunch of buttons. I especially love the kids that just have two Ipods and a mixer at the bar, and you know all there **** is on playlist because its the same set they played the week before, and for the whole set they've got headphones on and are fiddling with **** the whole time

I understand that, but to me a laptop and a crate of records isnt even apples and oranges its like radishes and watermelons, and I know its hard to put seperate lables on them. I have plenty of respect for both, and I value them for what they are, which is performance art (to me at least). Im just bothered that these days there are a million and one kids that claim to be Dj's and all they are doing is playing an Itunes playlist and arent even aware of the programs you guys have been talking about.
None of this is directed at anyone here or really anyone in particular, I am a fan of electronic music and people who can compose, just not a fan of people that claim to be Djs when they arent really doing anything. |

I DJ every month or so. Mostly spin soul, funk, glam, old punk, motown, stax, and good old rock n' roll. Not really any hip hop or electric stuffs, unless you count New Order or Joy Division....
I only use vinyl, the iPod comes out when I order a drink or take a break. I have been a drummer for 9 years and just recently got into DeeJaying because it is fun as **** and easy money. I don't really try to be a skilled DJ in the way of beat matching etc, but more the art of the tune selection. I love buying records. Spending a weekend looking through dusty old crates around town. |

Yup, I'm a DJ... I spin mostly classic (late 80's and 90's) and underground hip hop... instrumentals as well... strictly vinyl!!! 2 technic 1200's and vestax mixer... not a big fan of sarado, laptops... but whatever floats your boat...

Why don't you want to beatmatch? Yeah, DJ'ing is easy if you're not actually mixing songs together.
It's just a fun side project. I do love watching DJs that can rip it up though. |
Djs are about the lamest luddites. It's the same song no matter what it's being played from...and beat matching is dumb. Why would I wanna listen to 130 bpm all night? Boring boring boring.

House... Since 1993-94... I've taken a few years off, and come back to realize everyone uses CDs and Serato now. House mixes at: http://djedwhite.com/mixes/

Watching someone do a "lap top set" is about the lamest thing on the planet. And if you aren't going to beatmatch electronic music you might as well not be spinning it in the first place.

Gotta make sure you rail 2 pills and plug the 3rd, though.

Disagree on all points! I don't care if other people can't hear the difference but I THINK I can, in a club anyway. And that's what counts. At home I couldn't care. I beat match and play from about 80 bpm through to 170 bpm, sometimes within an hour. Beat matching is just one tool. You don't have to use it but it's a nice skill to pull out. I reckon it makes DJing much more fun. |

It's just a fun side project. I do love watching DJs that can rip it up though. Records with real drums are so much harder than drum machines, but if you get a beat mix right (in the right key also) it is the most awesome thing. Check out the Andy Votel mixes ("Music to watch girls cry" & "songs in the key of death") to hear how he mixes soul, freakbeat, funk, etc. Drum-break drop-ins, beat mixing, fades.... Inspiring.... |
