Dawes Galaxy 80s
I got a Dawes galaxy, made from Reynolds 531 from the stickers on it; from my grandad.
Looks like it has seen better days, so I am thinking of sending it to bob jackson cycles (Im in the UK)
to check the frame over then chrome it.
My thinking is this will keep the frame in good condition for a long time.
The other thing is that most of the components which where with the bike need replacing.
It sounds like phil wood make with good durability in mind,
so I was thinking of using them for the BB and hubs, not sure on rims, open pros,
or maybe deep v, they seem to be the cool one to go for
I've already bought some tyres, for the front I bought a GP4000s, back is ultra gatorskin;
hopefully these will last awhile.
Been on hubjub and the cheap sugino cranks with the chainwheel seem good (RD messenger),
might buy a quality cog EAI?
Old bike so I'm gonna go with a brooks saddle as there quite retro and seem pretty good quality,
might have a seatpost about I can put it on, but the seat tube seems a strange size *shrug*.
For a headset I thought about the chris king ones since they are meant to have good durability,
are they worth the cost?
I really want to put some on-one midge handlebars on aswell but I have no idea if they will go with the bike though.
I need some ideas for brakes or anything else I haven't thought about.
Oh also I'm thinking of using the bike for everything, like commuting to work,
and touring across europe in the summer,
and doing some cross in the winter (probably change the tyres
) is this asking to much?
PS sorry long just wanted to write it down, so don't mind if no one reads it

Definitely buy a good quality cog, the threading will be better on them and that will help to prolong the life of your hubs.

I have a 70's Dawes Galaxy, and it's loverly. Chromed fork crown. They did come with centrepulls, which are easily available, and work quite well. I can measure the reach of a set, if you like. If you go to 700c, it's going to mean you need a smidgen more reach. Galaxys were really good quality, but don't expect it to pretend to be a track bike; it's a touring frame, so it's going to be a very stable, conmfortable, but not particularly quick handling bike. On the plus side, when you want fenders and a rack, you're sorted.....

It's tight. 57mm, centre of brake hole to centre of rim is exactly right for my bike, with 27" wheels, so I'm guessing you really need 59 plus for 700's. Most old sidepulls will reach that easily, however, it's the modern dual pivots that might be a problem. Trouble is, I don't know for sure that they might not have changed the clearances. They will have gone to 700c at some time in the 80's. Here's what my 70's Galaxy is looking like at the moment, unfinished (apologies for geared content). It's going to be the lightest weight interpretation of the classic English 3 speed I can make (those cottered steel cranks are going)
