A call to value conscious hipsters

Please go over to the road forum and chime in on the bikesdirect thread. They are proposing to offer some new product lines. It seems that they might be able to sell Reynolds 853 road frames for 400$. If they can do a road frame for 400$ why not convince them to offer a track frame of that tubing?

full lugged +1

Why hello there Mr. Bikesdirect. May I buy you a drink?

I chimed in with 3 requests only to visit thier site and find they already sell two of them. That Motobecane SS 29er looks pretty slick.

It has already been decided. The carbon-fibre frames are made by Kestrel, which was recently bought by Fuji. Sounds like a good deal but wow, an 853 track frame would rule.

That title really needs a hyphen. I was preparing to value conscious hipsters.

Yeah, their current product offering is pretty impressive. I was disappointed after buying a used 'cross bike, only to find that I could have got a basically equivalent or better frame from Bikes Direct for the same cost.

Motobecane FLY TEAM Ti for $1998 [this is the most insane deal on a XTR level Ti bike ever] [probably ships April 08]

Good Jesus. I love bikesdirect.

I promise this is the last time I post about a non-track frame on this thread.

dirtyphotons 11-06-07 11:24 AM

i don't get the "no disc brakes so it's legal" comment on the ti cross bike.

i mean, you can still put the mounts on there. it adds a lot of functionality and costs a few bucks and a few grams extra. plus disc brakes are legal in most u.s. cross races.

lugged track bike +1

doofo 11-06-07 11:48 AM

boo

singlespeed bikes are already cheap

give me groups and frames for the price of groups or give me nothing

bonechilling 11-06-07 11:50 AM

I said this in the other thread, but I'll repeat it here. I think that 853 would be great as a group buy option, but as a regular offering, it misses the point somewhat. The road frame is logical, because the market is substantially larger, but for the average Bikes Direct track bike buyer, super lightweight high-grade steel would be complete overkill. They really should introduce a lugged steel track frame, a la Alien Bikes, in the $2-$300 range, but just keep it basic 4130 CroMo.

bonechilling 11-06-07 11:52 AM

Also, this sounds like I should start saving:
Motobecane le Champion Ti Road with Ultegra Shifter, Der, Ritchey Pro cockpit & DS wheels; cane creek brakes, and FSA engery compact for $1498 [probably ships April/May 08]

agreed...basically a lugged Kilo TT would be perfect

mascher 11-06-07 12:53 PM

For the record, in that thread lugs have been discussed and he's said he'd be amenable to a high quality (853 or 631) lugged frame, but it would add 200 to the price of a complete bike; I'd imagine that would go for a track frame too.

Hope springs eternal though. I'm crossing my fingers for the ti road bike myself.

bikesdirect_com 11-06-07 02:36 PM

OK
From what I can tell; I maybe getting a free drink
AND lots of people want higher grade track frame
some want lugged

Can I ask
is it OK to go with function over fashion?
tig welded is just as functional as lugs [many say better] but lugs look great
Price of lugs is a lot

let'sd put it this way
853 tigged is cheaper than lugged 520
so - given that

what would be the choice
top of the line 853 tig
nice 520 with lugs
or something else?

[btw - 853 with lugs costs more than carbon fiber - and almost as much as Ti]

seems I should really do the higher grade track
now the question is which frame

btw #2 - light stiff aluminum is less than 520 even - not expensive at all

here I am open to ideas
and drinks [LOL}

time bandit 11-06-07 02:41 PM

853 plz.

welcome to bfssfg

bonechilling 11-06-07 02:51 PM

Aluminum is definitely the cheapest, lightest and most pragmatic, but since I think very few people intend to races these bikes anywhere other than the local alleycat, I don't think it'd be as popular.

I still think that lugged CroMo would win out over 853, for the type of buyer you're seeing (unless we're talking about a group buy). I'd really love to be wrong about this.

What kind of price are we talking, anyway?
