sprinting tonight!
NYC Rat Pack Hustle
anybody on bikeforums that is interested in coming out and sprinting tonight (assuming you're in the nyc area) definitely should. there's a group ride meeting up in brooklyn at the north side entrance of the williamsburg bridge tonight at 7:20 and another meetup in manhattan on the west side bike path at 34th st at 7:30.
this is a lot of fun and yes, it's a good place to learn stuff, hang out, push yer limits and get down with BEER SPRINTS!
anyone that feels self concious about their abilities, please don't feel threatened. just remember that dutret will never judge you in real life.

... pretty much everyone who takes part in them has a reasonable amount of experience on group rides first. Of course you really have no clue about that...
You shouldn't weed racers out of an alley cat but you should give them a lecture about being respectful of other people and not pushing their limits around other riders and bystanders.

The day we start having lectures before alleycats is the day they become helmet-mandatory and have a police escort.

All I can say is that I have never once seen even a cat5 racer do a wheelie at the start of a crit, ever, and some of them are pretty inexperienced. I have never pulled the front wheel up starting a sprint on my track bike either. The point was that when you have a wheel in the air, you don't have full control, which is not something you want in a race.

What's wrong with having a little lecture reminding people that they're there for fun before hand? From what people say here it's standard before alleycats in other cities. Given the type of bull**** I see people doing at your events not doing so cause it's one step towards making helmets mandatory and getting a police escort is ****ing stupid. People intentionally put other riders in danger cause they value winning more then they should. People slam into cars and ride away frequently cause they are riding faster then they are able to control their bikes sometimes they throw in a few curses for the driver because they are self entitled pricks who think only of themselves. Behavior like that is repugnant and I'm really disappointed that you would be so dead set against reminding people of such just because it's the type of thing that happens at a real race.

This was actually bothering me because I do consider you a friend and while I would expect that sort of attitude from the hess dogs you've always seemed a lot more reasonable than that.
Do you think that riding beyond your ability in a way that is dangerous to other riders and bystanders is laudable?
How about intentionally endangering others to get an advantage?
If so is that so fundamental to alley cats that trying to minimize it would ruin them?
If not:
Do you deny that such behavior is pretty common in alley cats including the ones you organize?
Do you not feel any responsibility to minimize how much of it you are unleashing on the city?

for what it's worth: before most of the alleycats i've participated in, the organizer(s) have made public comment to the effect of, ride smart, ride responsibly and know your limits. maybe it's because i've been racing races organized by people doing it long enough to roll their eyes at the balls-out cowboy business that can sometimes categorize neophyte enthusiasm.
additionally, i've had many conversations with other racers about a general code of etiquitte during races. work together. no sense in being so overcompetetive that you're a jerk.
like many sports, alleycats are as much (or more) about pitting you against yourself as they are competing with other people. people ought to help each other out on the street.

Jesus, so you're trying to say that bike races don't start with sprints? Okay, I've never seen a track race, TT, road race, or crit start with an experienced rider pulling the front wheel off the ground. I'm not saying it was intentional or not, but if it was, it was completely a jackass move. If it wasn't, it wasn't because "dude has mad torque," it was due to him leaning too far back, where he wouldn't get optimum power starting a sprint ANYWAY.
