It is indeed illegal to ride on the sidewalk. Sidewalks are meant specifically for walking traffic. Biking should be done on the street... so you have the legal right to take up space.

I am also working on a bicycle advocacy group called BikeFriendlyRVA. Aside from pushing for signage from the richmond government, I am also pushing for bike lanes to be considered when they redesign all the streets to the two-way system. Other cities and countries also have bike specific lanes that cut through alleyways, parks, etc to act as a bike highway, I was hoping we could do the same. I am in the midst of drafting a petition to go along with the signage/information if any of you would be interested in signing it.

Anyone interested in a daily early morning ride? I've started doing just like ~15 miles in the morning before class, around 6. It would be rad to do it with someone else..

slotmachine 02-19-08 03:02 PM

sage count me in, I work everyday @ 730 and I ride there, so that sounds gnarly

icknayvon 02-19-08 03:07 PM

I'm down with the get down! 6 works for me depending on the morning. I work at 8 and ride there.

Also if you have not yet done so, go peep Bunnyhop at the new spot!

google "virginia bike laws", there's a pdf that comes up that has all of the laws for bikes and such.

I was just at Bunnyhop! It looks awesome!

I have class at 9, and try to be back at my place by like 7:30ish to get ready.. but I'm down for whatever.
Getting up early can be a pain the ass for me, but it feels good and I'm getting better at it!

icknayvon 02-19-08 03:55 PM

This week friday might be the best for me if you wanna do this that soon.

piratelove 02-19-08 04:51 PM

It's where Nonesuch used to be, on Grace. I think it's 918 Grace?

It's awesome! So much bigger.

Straws 02-19-08 04:55 PM

streetlamp 02-19-08 06:34 PM

I blew it up again tonight! Ive gone through 3 tubes in 2 days. I cant figure this **** out, I patched a tube and put a brand new tire around it to make sure I didnt have anything stuck in my other tire that I couldn't find. I'm gonna buy a brand new tube tomorrow (again) so I will have 2 brand new tubes and tires.

There has to be glass hiding in the alley behind my house or something, but its never given me a problem before. Its getting annoying.

piratelove 02-19-08 10:46 PM

that blows..

is your rim-tape ok? anything sharp on your rim?
maybe you bent it a little with all those sweet bunnyhops and now there's a little sharp part?

streetlamp 02-19-08 10:57 PM

Everything looks fine, I went over it plus its not only been my front tire but I've been busting my back tire too. And the the holes are always in different areas around the wheel.

I think a nice neighbor busted a 40 in the alley and I keep running it over while my roommate keeps missing it somehow. I looked all over the alley and I cant find anything I should be hitting. Im gonna also start going the other way to avoid anything thats hiding.

-edit- also whatever it is has been putting a hole through the tire also so I doubt its a bur on the wheel or something inside. I bet tomorrow after a new tube and going the other way I wont have any problems.

VAwitt 02-19-08 11:01 PM

sage, im down for the 6am ride
tomorrow?

that **** was happening to both me and my roommate for a while. We were going through 2 tubes each a week for a few weeks. Then as suddenly as it started, it stopped. Who knows what was going on.

Take a bit of cotton wadding, like the little medical swabs/balls or a bandage, and run it on the inside of the tire as well as the inside of the rim. The wadding will catch on anything sharp and leave little bits behind. In this manner you can often see a small thing that is causing repeated flats, which may otherwise not be apparent ot the eye.
