as i understand it, the story behind that failure involves an automobile and not simply general use/abuse.

Aerospoke are heavy and very flexy = slow.

Out of 140 wheels tested for deflection the Aerospoke came absolutely rock bottom last at 140th ! - scoring lower than even cheapo supermarket wheels.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/rinard/wheel/data.htm

They also scored very badly with regard to weight - a typical set (with track hub) will come out at around 2550g (and nearer 2610g with a white powdercoat finish) - this is a real heavy weight compared to a decent set of (vastly cheaper) hand built wheels which is fairly easy to bring home at around 1600g.

One other thing to bear in mind is that the Aerospokes (and the majority of lower/mid priced composite wheels) will never be perfectly true - nor can you ever true them - they will always run a little wobbly - the general advice is to open out your caliper arms a little to stop break rub (especially under power or on corners) other than that you will just have to live with them always being a little out of true.

Anyone here claiming Aerospokes are fast must credit their own legs a little more - rather than the heavy flexible wheels they have on their bikes, these people would be even faster on a lighter, stiffer wheelset.

Hed3s are good option, mush lighter, much stiffer but more expensive.

Saying all that I think Aerospokes look great.

So many haters here. I wonder how many of these hater have actually ridden the wheels. The price on a Aerospoke isn't ridiculous and the weight is comparable to a Deep-V setup and I see Aerospokes on tandems all the time so it can't be that weak.

Bikes: Check the sig to find out

here's the low down...yes they suck for sprinting since they are so flexy, but when you are MOVING they keep you going from rotational weight making it easier to maintain a high speed. Again, its just a personal thing. I think alot of people complaining about how heavy they are are lighter riders. I'm 180 so it doesn't bother me as much. Plus since I was able to crack a OP on a pothole and ppl say how strong they are, it has me think otherwise about getting wheel that are lightn (but I still do like light wheels cuz after switching from A-spokes, I feel like I'm flying).

Can you convert that to degrees of trendiness?

You seem to be confused. They are even more than a pound and a half heavier than a set of Mavic Ellipses (2714g compared to 1996g), which everyone seems to complain about. And yes, I have ridden AeroJokes and put quite a few miles in on them but I dont think they are anything to write home about.

Im 205, on a light day, and can often be found with 30lbs+ in my bag. I hated the wheel on the front because the turning seemed slower and the crosswinds wanted to take the nose of the bike all the time. The rear I dont mind but I dont see any benefit over a well built traditional rear. Im all for rocking what you want though. Go big or go home.

very true on the slow turning. they suck if you want performance to count (racing, getting places as fast as possible) but for general riding, commuting, and wanting to look good they work well

If you really want something different, then just look for disc covers for standard wheels, they're like $60, and removable.

i like 'em. they're heavy and very durable, so i use them to train with. and, i would be remiss if i didn't mention that i love the way they look.
