What's this thing about valve caps? Never heard that's it's better to take them off? Why? Fashion?
Thanks for the kind comments guys.

kill whitey is a sweet album by a crappy punk band i like. i'm not racist.

yeah, timothy mcveigh was pretty cool too. he got things done. and he didnt like lincoln either and had a t-shirt that would make a sweet spokecard for your fixie.

sure, valve caps don't look pretty in your photos. but they keep grit and dirt out of the valve body, and out of your pump head. i leave them on.

coomer— love the chainstays.

sheldon brown:

Separate valve caps are not needed with Presta valves. The caps that come with Presta tubes and tubulars are there so that the pointy end of the valve won't puncture your spare tube or tubular while it is rolled up. There's no reason to use them in actual riding

without that, the bike would be fine

Over in C&V, the sticker was understood immediately, and completely - and appreciated. Point of view, I guess.

Very nice & understated. Is that Brooks leather bar tape? :thumb:

I was thinking about doing this all over my bike a few months ago but never got around to it. Really cool though.

droobieinop 02-04-09 12:47 PM

^^ how would one do this? with a sharpie?
most importantly, how to seal it when done? clearcoat?

rotharpunc 02-04-09 01:39 PM

Id use a fine tip sharpie after cleaning then give it a quick blast of clear

Coomer 02-04-09 01:49 PM

I used a regular Sharpie and didn't clearcoat it once done. I just left it as is and I'll see how it holds up over time.

stryper 02-04-09 02:47 PM

I would not recommended clearing that in any conventional way. The solvents in the paint will dissolve the ink and it will be all runny and smeary by the time it dries.

Coomer 02-04-09 02:53 PM

That's kinda what I figured. I also didn't prep the existing paint for any sort of clear, so it would most likely flake/peel off.

If you don't think it's a good bike then why did you bother buying it? They are like $300 now so why not get BikesDirect frame?

I'm not familiar with the powder coating process, but is there a clearcoat when this is done?
What about some of the bikes I've seen with comic strips on them? How is that done?

I'm looking for a way for my bike to stand out, without being too flashy, maybe paint-pen graffiti, I don't know, I have a good I but I've never been into doing graffiti...

I digress, keep us up on the wear?

my first post here!
My fixie project:

Steyr frame, Alex wheels, techtro front brake and Pake cranks with a cut down flat bar = lots of fun.

elTwitcho 02-04-09 10:14 PM

It'd be a good idea to invest in some foot retention. Riding fixed without it is dangerous and silly.

toytech 02-04-09 10:19 PM

Straps are coming.

mtusz 02-04-09 11:53 PM

That's awesome with the sharpie. I want to do that to a frame but I will probably use the industrial strength sharpies. They NEVER come off.
