Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Similarly, saying things like, "Wow, that is officially the stupidest "urban" fad ever. Stupider than spinner rims, even," is essentially the aught-six equivalent of saying things like, "wow, breakdancing sure is silly looking."

tell me about it - you wouldn't even begin to believe (or understand) the level of demonstrated stupidity i've witness (in the aftermath) as a firefighter. incidents that often occur in the wee hours and thus missed by most; including tv media.

at times, when i recall a particular call/response to friends (fortunate enough to have chosen normal careers) i'm reminded of a famous quote ----- "a person is smart, but people are stupid."

from where i'm standing - it's darwin at work

Yeah, I'm a total racist because I think it's stupid to get out of your car, sit on the hood, wave your arms around and then get back in. Clearly, "ghostriding the whip" is the inheritor of the spirit of late 1970s hip-hop culture: a defiant artistic expression of African-American resilience and joy in the face of economic ruin and persistent discrimination. Thirty years from now, people of all races and colors will be "ghostriding the whip" in tribute to these cultural pioneers--these ur-ghostriders, if you will--and boy, will the joke ever be on me, huh?

You were the one who compared it to breakdancing. Somehow I don't think something as stupid, dangerous, and talentless as jumping out of a moving car and waving your arms around will have the staying power of breakdancing.

I didn't compare it to breakdancing.

Also, "stupid, dangerous and talentless" pretty much describes riding a brakeless fixed gear, doesn't it?

I've got boxes full of crap. I've been ebaying the the stuff I don't use. Besides, some of those draw sets are pricey.
