Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Gonna settle on making this frame a single speed now since I got these wheels for a screaming deal. Just waiting for a rear brake and TT lever.

What was the "screaming deal"?

Depending on the model of tri-spoke, you might be able to pick up the track conversion kit that Hed puts out. It doesn't have any threading for a lockring though, so it might not be ideal for the street.

The Surly Fixxer might do it too.

It's possible, but I think the Fixxer was designed for more modern style freehubs. Although I don't know, I'm presuming that he has the older threaded-freewheel variety. If they're both compatible, I'd love to know.

$550 for the set. They are the Specialized Trispoke before HED bought the design. They were used by a TTist with only 200 miles on them. They are threaded for a freewheel allowing it to be used with a track cog so when the season comes around again I'll be using it. I'm not riding it yet because I'm waiting for a rear brake since its set up in SS. I don't want to used it for fixed riding though

You haven't seen anyone else with that setup because it's considered dangerous and stupid to ride a brakeless track bike with platform pedals.

Well, the wheel should be dished so that you can't really get a straight chainline by just threading on a track cog or even a single-speed freewheel, but maybe there's enough room in there for you to fudge it a bit.

I was worried about that too but its near perfect straight *with the freewheel at least, I haven't tried it with a track cog yet. I'd assume it'll be a different story though

Interesting. Wasn't the wheel spaced for 130 when you got it? Also, are you using a 1/2" chain on a 3/32" cog? That would give you some extra room.

Purely anectodal, but the surly fixxer worked on my (now cracked) spin trispoke, which would currently be 12 years old, so who knows...

Though the owner does apparently have brakes, his gearing is so low that speeds should be low and skidding easy.
