Any you folks in Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn? Gonna be there in February for a week... from what I hear it is a kinda isolated area of Brooklyn, no trains etc. Anyway yeah...

yeah, red hook is kinda odd like that. it always feels a little creepy to me, too. there aren't a lot of trains and it is kinda isolated by road, but its not like its extremely far from anything. you can be in park slope in ten minutes from red hook. also, some of the loft apartments out there are amazing.

so yeah... just make sure to come with a bike

it's an interesting neighborhood. there's a lot more going on there now than five years ago. best supermarket in bk, too, from what i hear

if you're into bourbon, absinthe, and crazy rare bitters/alcohol, you gotta check out lenell's, on van brunt right at van ****. it's not a bar, just a small liquor store, but they'll probably have something sweet to taste open near the back. they have the largest bourbon selection east of the mississippi. decent prices, woman-owned, pretty solid.

i met a girl that works at lenells over the weekend. i've been meaning to go there and pick up some old rip van winkle for about a year now, but i have yet to get around to it.

i worked at lenell's when i lived in brooklyn. the commute from mrytle + taaffe was pretty nice, all slightly downhill, got to cruise through some yuppie brownstone aves, hit a few parks, pass the suits in carroll gardens, then straight down into red hook.

i've worked a lot of restaurant/food service jobs, and working at lenell's was the ****. i don't have much money to spend on mail-order booze these days, but i still order something from her whenever i can. her "red hook rye" is the absolute JAM. much more flavorful than the van wink rye, but still has that nice zing to it. some of the van wink bourbons taste pretty damn good though.

if you go, take a look at the "tasting" cabinet in the back, right by the last wine shelf before the kitchen. that right there was definitely one of the best job perks i've ever had.

and for something else to do, if you drink beer and aren't vegan, hit up schnack on union for a chocolate beer milkshake. delicious.

**** yeah, this is the **** I neeed to know. I am vegan but doooo certainly drink beer... what are the good vegan jams round those parts then? I am staying with a vegan also but it would be nice to know ahead.

i'll definitely try the red hook rye. old rip van winkle isn't the best i've ever had, but for the price, its unreal.

i typically don't make it much farther than prospect park in this weather unless i have to be somewhere specific. i get the feeling i'll stop by lenell's in the next few weeks though.

red hook is in f uckwhere brooklyn, but there's the smith/9th stop on the g which will take you into williamsburg, or you can bike there in like 20-30 minutes. Definatly check out the food market on the pier for the best food in brooklyn.

red hook is away from other areas and sectioned off by the highway. i had the privledge of working in a woodshop on a pre-civil war era pier. it was beautiful.

as per vegan things there are no specific cafes or shops to the neighborhood but a short bike ride up 15th st or union ave to park slope will take you to places like that. hope your friend is a member of the park slope coop, its a great resource for those in the area and still functioning since 1976.

fairway opened a store last year, its a local supermarket chain with a large organic section and focus on nice house brands. lots of great cheap imported stuff too. in house sushi, deli, bakery; italian & other imports, coffee, beer, olives etc all get special attention.

lenell's is an amazing liquor store.

if you came this past summer you could have seen some truly authentic latin american street food, an feature which arose from the organized soccer games.

common ground is a community based agriculture organization, which has a storefront office on vanbrunt and farmspace near the ballfields. they might have some local food that kids grew.

if it comes to it the b61 is the bus that goes from rh to long island city, passing clinton hill and williamsburg on the way. otherwise its the f or g trains to the b77 bus. you shouldnt ever need them though, its about 25 minutes (much faster) to the bridges or williamsburg by bike.

dont think of red hook as a limiting factor though. in those 25 minutes to the city you'll pass thru several different neighborhoods, all of interest. from italian spoken in carroll gardens/cobble hill to the arabic community along atlantic ave to art galleries and parties in dumbo there is alot of stuff to do along the way.

so the lady lady says her place is two blocks from Fairway... and she totally knows what coop you are talking about = double rad.

Any you guys actually made the trip into visit Trackstar? Worth it?
