Cogs work that work on with 3/32" or 1/8" chains

Hi there,

I mistakingly ended up buying a 1/8" freewheel from a bike store far away from home. I run a 3/32" chain and was wondering how some freewheels, such as this one: https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...slisearch=true work with both chains?

The freewheel I purchased was $12.64, is by Shimano and states 1/8x1/2 on it. It is a dark metal almost a brown color. I was hopeful it would work but when I put it on my bike the chain just slides over the teeth and wont catch very well.

I'm guessing I don't have a freewheel that works on both?

Thanks,

-Mike

Bikes: Titus road, Fort CX

probably because it is sized for 3/32 - and a 3/32 cog or freewheel will work with a 1/8 chain

the other way around will not so much

edit: what you bought was a SF-1200 (1/8 only) series, you wanted the SF-MX30 (3/32 or 1/8) series

What time did you purchase this? Can you scan the receipt?

1/8 chain works on 1/8 cog or 3/32 cogs. Or chainrings. 3/32 only compatible with 3/32 stuff.

pitboss. Although I think operator just worded his answer a bit confusing and meant to say the same thing.

The chain is the key to the equation:
3/32 chain - only use 3/32 rings, cogs or freewheels.
1/8 chain - use any combo of 3/32 or 1/8 rings, cogs or freewheels
