GR-9's and if you're going double, Soma Oppy XX Four-Gate Toe Clips.

That sucks, I've been riding mine for almost a year without problems. Though I'd say it is probably time to replace them.

time bandit 12-29-07 01:34 PM

word, im sure i got a faulty one, that it doesnt happen often. although to slow up i am usually pulling up on my right foot quite hard.

I am also talking about the leather ones. I've never had a problem with a nylon christophe.

i like any kind of nylon strap as it stays tighter better in my experience.

These pedals (SR SP-11):

With this strap/doubler setup:

I have some new black clips and Toshi doubles on their way to me, so it'll be tweaked shortly, but mechanically will be mostly the same.

fetch 12-29-07 01:44 PM

yeah im a steel clip fan. but mine broke after a year and right now im rocking teh alloy. i guewss i should have said steel since its my fav setup, as this thread is about favs - not current.

p.s. damn dave! that setup looks like a tank

I haven't used the new "vegan" doubles, but don't bother with the regular leather Soma doubles. While they have actually proven to be a lot more durable than I expected them to be, price/performance yields a lackluster value. Better to save a little longer and get better straps.

LoRoK 12-29-07 02:27 PM

MKS custom nuevo, toshi doubles and mks clips (my soma 4 gates are waiting for me to pay soma to ship them)

dmotoguy 12-29-07 11:13 PM

i have shimano spd
http://www.evanscycles.com/product_images/L156.jpg
and i've pulled out of them a few times lately..
are egg beaters better for that?
or should i switch back to straps?

thurstonboise 12-29-07 11:30 PM

ATACs in the summer.
MKS/MKS with soma straps in the winter. I just can't keep my toes warm in my bike shoes.

+ double gate clips and campagnolo straps. These are the ****, except I am missing the dustcaps and the platform part is starting to come unswaged from the spindle on the left one, I need to JB weld it.

On my road bike, these (SR SP-12), but with steel clips with leather sewn on for a classy look:

pretty comfy.

I used MKS sylvan tracks and GR9s. The GR9s were nice, but too narrow for my feet. I hated the short cages on the sylvans, the corners dug holes all the way thru the soles of my etnies within a couple weeks.

SRSLY, what the hell is up with that? All my shoes have the perfect marking of my pedals on the bottom and a little hole in the same spot

nexus6 12-30-07 05:56 AM

I tried V8 MTB pedals, eggbeaters, candy's and clips with both single and then double straps. The doubles fit the best and are the most confortable for everyday riding. Sheldon agrees apparently.

nathbdp 12-30-07 09:18 AM

Personally, I did not like the Soma double gate oppy clips (whatever the hell that name means). They rubbed against my 1st metatarsi and cuneiform and irritated the hell out of it. Ended up flipping them on ebay.

I run eggbeaters on one bike and MKS touring with clips on another. Power transfer along the downstroke suffers with the eggbeaters because there is a smaller contact area on the pedal. This is why I'm upgrading to a Look or Dura Ace system soon, for those times when I'm pushing a higher gear. Spinning a lowish gear is OK with the eggbeaters, but I do notice greater power transfer and stability with platform pedals. The only weak point for me with platforms is 1) I have yet to find a stiff soled shoe to use with them and 2) pulling up on the pedal near the upstroke is significantly less powerful than with clipless. I could probably adjust for the latter by tightening the straps every ride, but I like being able to enter and exit easily.

good luck

oh, i'm getting the new soma doubles sometime soon, too. so that might be my new fave.

campy nylons are the worst! stretchy and slidy.

Try some new cleats first... they do wear out. And crank up the pedal tension.

I also use SPDs... and I never pull out (unless my cleats are worn).
