Wait, I changed my mind. Crosscheck ftw!
|
i like the tube group buy, like buy 6000 or so. Considering we bought 400 frames from tony, i dont think 6000 tubes is that crazy. maybe 10,000. like 20 per person.
But the carbon or ti track frame is a great idea. I remember Mike at BD saying something about ti being more expensive than carbon. i remember Hincapie rode a trek carbon fixed gear with 130 rear spacing. The purpose of this digression is to point out that getting a carbon track frame might be expensive due to the increased tooling costs. I also remember Mike mentioning something about being hesitant about producing a carbon track frame due to people beating fixed gears up. he might be concerned about warranty issues. I would be in for either. Preferably a complete bike, skimping on most components except either the wheels or the crank, like a sugino 75 OR the wheels he was hawking on the 12 days group buy, with a change from a cassette hub to a track hub for the rear. |

I went ahead and emailed Mike to ask about the cost of both a titanium and carbon fiber track frame, as well as about CF track wheels. I'll report back when I know more.
|
count me in on a group buy of just about anything.
heres an idea: set it up poll style, with all the parts listed. then we negotiate based on whatever amounts of each the poll yields. as long as people really commit to follow through, that is. id really, really like an accsesible ti frame, but also need hubs, wheels, cranks, et. al. |
I like your ideas, but I feel that bikeforums members, especially the ssfg crowd tend to be more price sensitive than most. i think a price poll with an option for just the frameset might be the best idea, then Mike at BD could spec out the bike, with us requesting specific changes in parts.
Considering that many of us prefer specific saddles/ handlebars/stems , maybe an incomplete "complete bike" might be a good idea. basically a frameset/wheels/drivetrain. |
i want:
1) carbon track frame and fork 2) set of high end wheels |

I like the tube GB idea. Specialized tubes at wholesale *used* to be about $1.09 each. That was 4ish years ago when I still got my employee discount. I imagine its gone up, but that is a lot of shop's cash cow since their markup on those is generally 400%. I used to never patch tubes until I stopped getting EE discounts. I think if we go down this path there should be a minimum purchase amount, say 20 tubes per size which if we get cost should amount to ~$25.
Also like the Cane Creek Volos idea. I am always missing GB deals because I don't pay attention,.... I will try not to miss this one. |

In addition to bone chilling I have also contacted Tony about a group buy.
I am willing to organize the GB regardless of what is eventually decided on. If someone else wants to do it, they are more than welcome, but if no one else REALLY wants to do it by say the 5th I will create a thread with the main options to this point: 1. High end track frame (prefer Ti or carbon) 2. Wheelset (Cane Creek Volvos vs carbon (which BD just did a road GB for, the road ones were $398 for tubulars and 5xx for 50mm clinchers) 3. Tubes? Anyone else care to offer anything? Re: Soma They won't. People have tried before, they just wont do a GB. I'm willing to contact them again but the chances of that are none to none. |

Lets do a tube-ing GB. Then we just have to find a good deal on lugs and we can all get what we want!

You can already get tubes cheap. If you're going to order random crap by the truckload it might as well be tires.

who the hell wants a bunch of tubes? the only way we'll get a close to cost deal is to purchase 250 to 500 of whatever item.
$1500 carbon track frame... maybe 800? $900 wheelset... maybe 500? $400 hubs... 200ish. $124 deep v's... 70? the more affordable, the more people can buy in.... |

We don't make a profit, the forum sees no extra ad dollars. It's basically good marketing for both parties (BikeForums.net and _______bike distributor). We just need enough orders. Not a lot. Just enough for the buy. Maybe I'll help conduct this thing. I have the experience. If it's worth my while (high end), then I'm game. My PM inbox is open to suggestions.;) |
how many people were in on the iro group buy?
|
I recommend a group buy on a decision making machine.
