I weighed in as a Mac guy earlier ... since there are so many of us I thought I'd give you a link to a couple of freeware programs I wrote for the Mac. In addition to being nerdy bike guy, I'm a geeky Mac guy.

My laptop at my last job was a dell inspiron somthing or other running windoze xp sp2. I never had a single problem with it using it all day long for over a year. Not a single issue. My home computer on the other hand crashes and blue screens all the time, even on a fresh install. I think it has a lot to do with crappy hardware and maybe not knowing how to set **** up. An viruses. I never bother with antivirus software on my own machine.

I have never had a virus, those are for chumps that open the email: "Britney Spears Nude Desktop!!! FREE" or some such crap.

I will admit to having headaches with all previous Windows releases, including 2000. But XP has run perfectly for me. I am afraid to move to Vista and see no reason to.

Also, webmail and a secure browser eliminates most problems with malicious incoming bull****.

i grew up with windows (3.1), though at school we used macs.

i find i can work much faster in windows, i know were stuff is, and the UI makes more sense, to me.

oh and i game, which makes mac totaly useless (but a dual boot power book, or whatever they call them now. would be fine).

i killed my main machine (water leak) so i'm stuck with my phone till i get a new g card.

Oh and whats with macs and horrible g cards? and how does overclocking work with macs? water cooling?

Though I don't own a Mac, I guess a water leak would cause damage to one, just like with a PC

Hardware is exactly the same. It is all x86 now. If you feel like over-clocking your CPU/GPU/etc.. go forth and ... ick, not recommended for any machine. Basically processors _can_ run faster then they are rated to. The key word there being rated. Your processor is rated at 2ghz or whatever because that is the speed at which it is prone to less failure.

As far as water cooling a mac, again it's just a computer with a different O/S basically, and since you had a water leak in your last machine I think you know the answer to that one ;-)

As far as gaming goes, x86 hardware again, so go forth and dual-boot. I dual-booted to play games for a bit, then just broke down and bought an xbox 360. My brief stint in college was for video games so I could talk all your ears off about why I think consoles are the way to go, but I'll save that for another day.

Never had to reboot my current MacBookPro. It's been on continuously since the day I bought it in Oct 2006.

How is that possible? Do you never update your system? You have to reboot when you update.

I live on a tiny island in the South Pacific. No mac dealers and with the s l o w e s t internet speed a "simple" 10meg download can take hours.... sometimes days with the amount of drop-outs we get. So I don't bother. It works fine and I don't use many applications so I leave it alone.

I could get the disc updaters by mail... but I never get round to it (upgrading bikes... now that's another story)

I'm due for a new Mac so that will be the 1st update

Life's tough on a little tropical island in the middle of nowhere

BTW, to all you guys cycling through snowstorms.. I got a sun tan cycling for 30mins at 7am this morning

All you mac guys and not crashing... you are not pushing your ram hard enough, I had a horrible time when my voltages were too low (user error). And its not always the os's fault, normaly my winows machine hangs in game.

If I had better hardware, I could run multiple games, and have 3 benchmarks running, but with my aging machine its hard to get a game to run, stupid crysis and r6,
GoW was fine as are source games (hl2 gmod css tf2...) what is wierd is that r6 lags while gow is great, even though both are ported and use the unreal 3 engine.

can you upgrade macs the same way you with atx seupts?

on the subject, have any of you more intensive users had any issues with your core2 duo machines running adobe apps, or aperture? i'm looking to pick up an Al imac in a couple months to replace my two G4 machines and need reliability in CS3, macromedia, and aperture.

Allow me to repeat: A Mac is just a PC with OS X on it these days.

If you feel so inclined up her up and throw in a new power supply. I've also never had issues with voltages, and I push my ram plenty enough. Applications will crash but I think this machine has only completely bombed twice and both times were because I was screwing around with things I shouldn't have been.

I run CS3 and CS2 on my machine with a slew of other rather intensive applications. No problems.
