Its my preference. Id rather ride with someone experienced with a brakeless fixed gear, than someone inexperienced, with a brake.
I never said anything about stopping power with a brake or without one.
If I did, I couldve stated that a front brake has more stopping power than a rear brake.
Maybe I shouldve been a bit more clear about what I was talking about.
You dont ride around a city playin hockey, do you?

Most people riding a fixed gear bike on the street, arent "professionals," per say. We are talking about riding in the street, not on a track. So comparing whatever I said about riding with a helmet, to F1 racing, = no.
Im talking about kids who skateboard/roller blade, bmx for fun. But hey, they are those kids on Scarred, and who are shown in the OWNED compilation vids on the internet...
Next time you go to sleep, dont forget to sleep with a mouth piece in your mouth. Safety for your teeth when you sleep. Dentist recommended.

dude. have you ever taken a crash and landed on your un-helmeted head? IT SUCKS. you feel like sheet and are all irritable and groggy for a few days, and thats assuming (really hoping) you haven't done your noggin permanent irreversible damage.
Maybe you don't plan on using your brain to say make a living or have an enjoyable life, but if you cant at least acknowledge how simple a method of preventing something so terrible wearing a helmet is, you clearly have nothing to loose in not wearing one.
I still don't wear a helmet every time i get on the bike, but i know i should, and never make fun of someone else for wearing one.

I'm sure you could find a way to blow that off since I'm 'from the Internet' or whatever, so why don't you go drop into a hospital and chat with some folks in the emergency ward, and ask them about all the head injuries they see, and how preventable they all are, and how awesome it is to give all those MRI scans and change out their bedpans and clean the gravel out from under people's scalps?

No brakes because I dont like them, because you become too dependant on them. I hate hearing stories from people saying "My brake saved me today, yesterday, etc etc..." If you really have to depend on your brake that much, you should change your riding style. Even if it comes down to "The car was backing out into me..." well, you shouldve seen that the car was gonna back out in the first place. Its your job to pay attention to your surroundings.
As for dependency? Pshaw - I'm dependent on my seat, tires, wheels, and all kinds of other crap on my bike. If my brake fails I know what to do, even if my brake AND chain fail I know what to do. By your logic I can call you a coward because you don't Ted Shred it everywhere you go. Depending on your lockring... what a wuss.

I don't care what anyone thinks about their brakes, as long as they don't imply that I suck for having one. I didn't even bother reading all this mumbo jumbo but hopefully it hasn't degraded to that.
I have had a helmet and tail light for a few days and a brake for a few weeks. I hate to admit it but the safety gear is liberating. Once you accept that you aren't going to look cool anymore it stops bothering you. If I still get f'ed up then too bad, I took care of my end of the bargain. Nothing for me to be guilty about.

Read pretty much every post in this thread. In the past few months, I've gone from someone who rode without lights or a helmet to someone who rides with both, as well as brakes. I heartily recommend all three for people who don't have time to relearn their colors, shapes, letters, and numbers. I work with kindergarteners, and that stuff is hard enough to pick up the first time.

but yeah, helmets, lights and brakes are obviously not a bad idea. i feel like an absolute moron/jackass every time i'm caught out after dark without lights. it's too bad you can't just keep lights on your bike all the time without them getting stolen... not taking a chance after my rear knog got snagged while i was away from it for 5.

If you are going to get wasted on your bike the odds are that it will happen at night and it will be because you had no lights.
This stat is pretty consistent anywhere that people ride bikes.
Having a front light lets oncoming cars see you and can prevent the dreaded left cross... I often run 2 front blinkies at night as the alternating pattern seems to get people's attention better.

All I can really offer up is this. I generally tend to not wear my helmet simply because I just don't care to. I don't run brakes on my fixed gear bikes because I can stop just fine without them. And last but not least, I do run lights at night because I want to be seen and I don't want a ticket. Cops here like to write chicken s**t tickets like that.

For the first year I rode with lights, brakes and no helmet. I then switched to lights, no brakes and helmet.
I run lights so I don't get a ticket (it's around $100 in Alameda county). Most of the time drivers aren't paying attention, so I don't think lights help in most cases. I usually end up running the knogs which I keep in my bag, but do have some brighter / more effective lights as well.
When I went to buy a helmet I knew I would never wear a cheap, ugly helmet so I spent some money. Like many others I care about my looks, and spend probably to much money on looks (clothes, parts, etc). I picked up a specialized helmet for around $150, and wear it 99% of the time. It has great air flow, in fact on cold nights it seems as if it makes my head colder. Although it sucks having one more thing to lug around, it's not that annoying when clipped to the back of my bag. Luckily I haven't used it yet, except for friends hitting me on the head checking to see if it works - *** holes
As far as brakes go, I was told all the cool kids run no brakes. j/k
