Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: CSK Points track, De Rosa Vega road, GT iDrive 3.0 mtb, Schwinn Paramount 8spd. beater...wish list: karate monkey ss, GT Xizang, 2009 caad9 (december) fixed gear beater of some sort.

as long as you don't let those pink drops hinder your game

What is the typical bike set up for polo?

also ... What does a mallet consist of?

and ... do any of your Richmonders (or students) ride the trails, fixed or not?

the easiest is: fixed, super high gear ratio (for easy manuverability), drops (contol), clipless pedals (wouldnt wanna slip out!) and a driver (golf club) will do the trick

Super high 52/11 or super-high 32/20? And dropbars, really? I can't imagine riding around in tight spaces, making big corrections, and leaning forward that much, especially while trying to weild a mallet.

Also, how much of an issue is toe overlap?

... and how would a fixed 29er at 32/18 fare?

Prolly not drop bars. I use a shorter riser/straight bar.
Toe overlap can become an issue if you are riding fixed, but you can learn to compensate like anywhere else.

That fixed 29er would prolly fare well. Remember, don't ride anything that you'd miss if it gets thrashed.

if you all can't pick up the sarcasm you probably cant hit a polo ball well enough to hang

52/11 is a little modest but it'll do, aim for a few more gear inches though.
