RIP Sheldon, you got me into fixed gear cycling back in '99. I've passed on your information to a lot of beginning cyclists. Thank you for allowing me to realize the bicycle is a tool and not a toy. This world was a better place by your existence.

It will be at the First Unitarian Society of Newton, across the street from Harris Cyclery. Details and a map link are at http://www.harriscyclery.com Prior to the service there will be a memorial ride starting and ending at the shop: Meet at 10:45 AM in the parking lot behind Harris Cyclery for an informal memorial ride before the service. Departure will be at 11:00. Distance: approximately 25 miles, pace slow to moderate. The ride will go by way of Weston to Water Row in Sudbury (water level permitting!), one of Sheldon's favorite places to ride, and will return by way of Lincoln. Just heard about this today. Obviously I don't check the forum much. Despite my best efforts, I thought of Sheldon as an almost superhuman repository of cycling knowledge. His website got me into English 3-speeds and made me happy that there were other people out there not carried away or impressed by the latest craze but rather motivated by a love for life and cycling. It's been said before, but he'll be missed, even though I never met him.

there's no way in hell i would have been able to build my first track bike without emails to sheldon brown. he was the king.

Sheldon's website was a treasure to me when I got into cycling and tinkering with bikes 15 years back. His writing style was refreshing and a unique peek into his character.
He'll be missed greatly. But take joy in all that he gave and helped while he was with us. His writing and his bringing together of so much information will ensure him a little bit of immortality for many years to come. |
I built my first wheel going back and forth from the garage to the den where I had Sheldon's wheelbuilding site pulled up, just to make sure I didn't mess up. He'll be missed.

I probably woud'nt be riding fixed gear if it were not for Sheldon Brown's fantastic website. He provided so much help and inspiration to me. I will always be grateful. Although I never met him his loss will leave a void in my life. It's not often that one encounters someone with such vast knowledge combined with even greater humility. Eternal peace be with you.

Just heard the news - what a loss for Sheldon's family and the cycling community. In the last four years since I've gotten back into cycling Sheldon and his website inspired me to build/resurrect four bikes, including 2 fixies. I was inspired by his common sense and humorous take on life, and I admire people with passion. Before his website I had little appreciation for the true value of the two Bridgestones that previously collected dust in my garage...

I have been overseas in Thailand and just read of Sheldon's passing.
I spoke to him on several occasions. He seemed to always have the time to listen and help. The amount of energy and time he took to answer questions either by phone or email is hard to image. Although I didn't speak to him for over 5 years, his presence and knowledge was easy to access through his unbelievable website. RIP Captain Bike and my best wishes to his family. |
I had the good fortune to meet Sheldon on two or three occasions. He sold me my first Brooks saddle, and I ran into him at various shows. I also had email conversations with him on other occasions. It's sadly rare to find someone with such knowledge and insight, who is also so unbelievably kind and happy to help. It's thanks to him I ride fixed, brake on the right, no tread on my tires, have ridden 3-speed, had a fillet-brazed schwinn, and will soon get a trailer for my little son. We are richer for having known him, and poorer for having lost him.

I am not here all that much (shame on me, but I have been busy elsewhere), so I just heard about his death. I learned a lot from him...what a loss. Condolences to his family and friends. :cry: |

I must have been in the cupboard. RIP Sheldon and condolences to his family... I've used his site countless times to fix this or that on my bikes. An amazing man and should never be forgotten!

I never knew you. Today, while surfing the net in an attempt to fix an old english 3 speed bicycle for my father (76 and still riding) I found a web page that instructed me on rebuilding the sturmey archer hub. I would have never been able to repair it without the help of this step by step article.
I was sad to read you had passed. I guess even after your gone you have still helped someone today. Thank You Sheldon. |
