What a weird day.

Sheldon dies, a man who I never knew but admired. Simultaneously my wife's in pre-labour, waiting to give birth to our son.

Very strange.

Well I think it's obvious what the name should be!

you're up there at the top

Thanks Sheldon. You'll be missed.

your wisdom will be missed, sheldon.

TimArchy 02-05-08 01:51 AM

As soon as I heard the news I sent messages to HKfixed in Hong Kong and BKKfixed in Bangkok. I got a quick reply from Ball who writes BKKfixed saying that Sheldon's site was the first place he found when he started his search for fixed gear bikes.

Sheldon "Famous Around the World" Brown.

You'll be missed more than you know.
I'll always be proud to say that I came of age in the "Sheldon Era" of fixed gear.

BuddyMike 02-05-08 01:52 AM

This sucks. He just signed up at bostonfixed a few weeks ago. I've been to Harris a billion times and never met him. I've probably met the medic's that took him to the hospital.

Sixty Fiver 02-05-08 02:18 AM

As a mechanic, people ask me how I know so much about bikes and the answer is of course, Sheldon Brown.

Besides that, he was without doubt, one of the most gracious and generous of people a person could have ever hoped to meet.

ZeroG 02-05-08 05:07 AM

Thanks for everything Sheldon; Your wit, your humor, and your ability to give knowledge in the most subtle and humblest of ways. I think you have inspired us all to be more than what we are, and you have played a key role in helping me find my way back to loving and riding bicycles.

Rest in peace.

Wasnt he physically fit from riding bicycles?

Yup. Me too. RIP Sheldon. Many thanks for helping me get back into shape and for learning to enjoy working with my hands.

I feel like I threw a chain and did a face plant. My condolences to family and friends.

The cycling IQ of this forum just dropped by 20 points.

Riding in the sky...

What a loss for the cycling community and for all whom he touched in life. Sheldon's information gave me the confidence to start building up my own bikes. My thoughts and condolences to his family and those who were close to him.

Sheldon had MS. He blogged about it inconspicuously on his site in a small Health section. As I recall it messed with his balance and he could no longer ride a bike, so he was riding around on a tadpole recumbent trike (thus satisfying Bikesnob's most stringent "Would you still ride if... " question).

I'm not a cardiologist, but from what little cardiology I've studied, it could have also been a matter of a lack of collateral circulation. This sometimes leads to fatal heart attacks in pre-geriatric athletes. I'm not aware of any cardiac related risks in MS patients who stay physically active, and not aware of any cardiac risk factors from MS medications other than a hypertension risk from corticosteroids use. Remember as well, heart attacks have a huge genetic factor. Ed Burke being a sad example of this, who was in amazing condition and had a fatal heart attack while cycling. Anyway, Sheldon is such a tragic loss. My prayers are with his family and friends.

i just got the news.

Sheldon "Culture Preserver" Brown, rest in peace.

grace and peace to the Brown family. thank you so much for sharing.

Sheldon IS my co-pilot. Personally I cannot imagine a ss/fg mentality that does not grow around Sheldon's wisdom and knowledge. I would like to take this opportunity to point out that:
Our culture is not for sale. It's not only encouraged, but it's free: sheldonbrown.com
