Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I fell over while goofing off in the parking lot in front of my dorm today. Teh wheelie = fail. Toe straps proved quite challenging on the way down.

Especially when you're obviously *not* OK. Nothing says "I'm OK" like having your knees buckle when you stand up.

One time I was racing a car to an intersection(defending my lane,) but the light changed and I had to brake really hard and hit a pot hole while doing so. Well, I caused a pinch flat that I didn't notice being so amped from the race. This was heading down Seneca st from First Hill to Downtown in Seattle (steep downhill.) So when the light changes I start bombing down the street again, but I only had a block left to work. As I pulled off the street in to the building's plaza, I caught a front skid on the wet ground with my flat tire. I got a foot down and managed to crumple rather than slam at least. Lots of people from the building were around, but only one coworker saw it. He made sure to relive the story with everyone at the office.

I almost forgot about this, but one time I was skidding down a wet sidewalk towards the entrance to my work and by the time I realized I wasn't going to stop in time it was too late. As panic set in, I grabbed a fistful of front brake (with my balls on the stem BTW) and went over the bars face first into the door of the building. My bike came flying up behind me and smashed me up against the building. The high speed skid up to the entrance to the building was done to impress my co-workers who were outside smoking, so I was obviously a little embarrassed.

I came up on a railroad crossing one day and the gates were down. There were probably a dozen or more cars on either side of the gates, but there was no train in sight. That gate malfunctions often. Anyway, rather than stay in the street and weave through the gates, I decided I'd go on the sidewalk and stay behind the gates altogether. Then I realized the gate's counterweight hung directly over the sidewalk. No biggie, I thought. I'll just duck and lean and pass by it no problem. Just as I was ducking and leaning though, I suddenly remembered I was wearing a backpack. The pack caught on the counterweight, I stopped dead in my tracks (pardon the pun), and flopped down into a ditch alongside the rails. My feet never came out of the clips so there I was flat on my back, wheels straight up in the air, with a couple dozen people watching me the whole way. Hilarious!

I have had two 0 mph falls so far today, both at the exact same intersection. Today has not been a good day.
