Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Nice observation on the chainring. By Atlanta '96, do you mean that is the track made for the '96 Olympics in Atlanta?

I'm really afraid for you when bombing hill it looks like that rear wheel will shred after a few seated quick skids. how much do you weigh?

I don't think the wheelset would fail catastrophically, though those old rears were at risk of developing small cracks around the spoke holes I believe. Be careful... Even in this day of low spoke count road wheels, not a whole lot of people really mess with 16 spoked rears because the tension to build it is so high and puts a lot of stress on the rim.
