the fixed tandem

my bro had this junkyard tandem... it got turned into a fresh fixed gear. this thing is rad. you can go pick up your girl from work on it and get burritos together.

first stage for initial test rides:

fully legit now, just needs some grips and maybe a brake for the back as once you get going, quick stopping is only for the gnarly:

who wants a burrito:

Want!

Peedtm 02-23-08 04:54 PM

hahaha. You guys look so happy. . . And I want a burrito!

curiousincident 02-23-08 05:06 PM

i'm eating a burrito right now, but unfortunately i had no tandem to get it with, had to ride all by my lonesome...

and that second picture looks distorted in some strange way.

Your girl looks seconds away from a pants vs chain disaster. But, awesome bike.

burrito vacuums cause this sort of anomaly

deathhare 02-23-08 05:19 PM

Very cool

forgot to factor that into my calculations.

Paint the frame in team Slipstream-Chipotle colors. Get matching Argyle t-shirts. Get mobbed by adoring fans on your next burrito run.

NitroPye 02-23-08 05:38 PM

I want a burrito.

sp00ki 02-23-08 05:51 PM

i'm so into the idea of these things.

what's turning like? the idea of pedalliing into a turn with someone in the back (or front, depending on where you are) seems kinda scary. can you describe how it rides? what kinda parts did you use for the build?

Thisisit 02-23-08 05:54 PM

I want a burrito and a tandem. And for my girlfriend to be interested in riding bikes.

YES! i told her that after we got off and i noticed her flaired out legs. but knowing her, her love of rope laces would be the real culprit

well, i gave it to my boy A-Dub and he built it... so he may have to answer some of the parts-related questions, but riding is, surprisingly, totally stable. my biggest concern is the double weight factor when stopping cuz trying to coordinate slowing is tricky. funny though, that the person in back can pretty much bring the bike to a stop by themselves. i tried skidding with no luck. it's a great feeling bike to tell the truth.

the parts were all used components from the bike co-op and janky leftovers. the most difficult part was having to build that chain tensioner that you can see between the front and back chainrings. dude had to take a single speed cog and somehow attach it to a modified hub and axle piece to make it work. and the front chain is a 1/8 and the one in back is a 3/32... go figure. the seatposts are like the skinniest ones ever made and who knows what kind of frame it is. i'll get him to chime into the board and maybe post some more pics.

Sweet!!

Buying a tandem just over a year ago was my best ever bike purchase. My girlfriend loves it too! However, it looks like a crappy mountain bike - with silver and blue chevrons and logos all over it. I'm looking for an old one now. Or get that one repainted...

I wish we could have a fixed tandem but in all honesty that probably ain't gonna happen.

awesome, can't wait.

so turning doesn't require coordination? turning corners solo on fixed requires (at least at cruising speeds) a concious "lean" effort. same thing on the tandem or no?

Gurgus 02-23-08 07:28 PM

Man, I missed out on a $250.00 tandem this summer by about ten minutes. It was an older one that was all there and nearly mint, SS. I want. Also want my wife to be more into riding, but whatever.

streetlightpoet 02-23-08 07:45 PM

Generally speaking, the captain leans and the stoker stays put. As usual, Sheldon had a lot to say on the subject.

Man, I'm so jealous. That's rad.

I started a thread about how great it is to not have a girlfriend. But seeing this thread and the happy couple riding a friggan tandem to get burritos tugs at my heart strings.

Seriously my three favorite things:

Burritos
Bicycles
****in

So ya... OP is living the dream.

+1, sigh.

Hope to see you at the Tuesday Night Ride pazzmore!

I could build a sweet fixed gear tandem like that, but there's no way that my girlfriend would ride it anywhere with me. She's too square.

Your girlfriend is not NJS.
