36-24 Spoking

I found an old 27x1 Shimano 36 spoke track wheel and wanted to build the hub on to a 700c rim. The only rear rim I could find has 24 holes (i work at a local bike coop, new parts are somewhat scarce). I designed a couple spoke patterns, both basically between 2 and 3 Cross on the drive side and one half radial on the left, the other between 2 and 3 cross on the left. I showed it to a local mechanic and he said it was a terrible idea, however I read this article https://www.sheldonbrown.com/rinard/36-24.htm about 36-24 spoking and it seems legit... It makes sense to me that if i use heavier gauge spokes and tension them well then the wheel will be pretty strong regardless of the number of spokes as the rim is pretty strong. Does anyone have experience or an opinion on whether or not this is a good idea and if its alright to build track wheels with left side half-radial?

It'll probably be OK as long as you are not a clyde and know how to tension spokes properly, but I would definately be gentle wth it. However, I suggest you keep looking for a rim. 36 hole rims are all over the place.

While I think generally that it's a much better idea to get a 36H rim, I support your initiative. You'll learn a lot doing this, even if you never repeat it again. Just be very careful with the spoke tensioning. I guess you don't have a spoke tension meter, so use your ears - the tension of the spokes is directly related to the pitch of the sound they create when hit.

Good luck and please, report back - with pics!!!!

EDIT: no problem for the left side. It's the right side you should be concerned. It very much depends on how strong of a cyclist you are.

It's interesting and unique, but I'm a fan of 36 spoked wheels. They're stronger.

Is the 27" rim junk, or are you rebuilding the wheel for clearance issues on a track frame?
