sealed shimano bb 107 or 110 mm width, english threaded $15 or so
road double (shimano/sugino are usually a good bet) off ebay $25 or so
$5 chainring bolts from the lbs if you cant get the bolts that come with the cranks to work as a single - you usually can by either flipping the ring and/or grinding the bolts

the current crankset is really old and worn out. i tried to mix and match parts but the cranks i have now have a weird, obsolete sizing to it from the eighties. i have the alexrims flip flop rear wheel

IRO cranks are supposed to be ok, but it looks like they raised their price

you could also try finding origin 8 or bulletproof for cheaper cranks.
but if you can wait, do what trons said

The Trek 420 would have almost certainly come with a triple crankset, which means you'll have to replace the spindle if you want to use the cranks on a fixed gear. I would recommend getting a new botton bracket along with the new cranks, following trons suggestions.
Here is my Trek 420 fixed gear conversion. Good luck with yours.

which bottom bracket and crankset did you use? i found out that the bottom bracket and the crankset that was on the trek 420 are obsolete and no current parts do not fit.

I doubt that highly. Mine came with inexpensive SR cranks that had a standard 110BCD. The bottom bracket was the older loose-ball kind, but nothing that couldn't be serviced today. If you can find a 107mm spindle, you should be able to slide that it as a replacement, although a new bottom bracket might just be easier.
As for bottom brackets, I used an English-threaded (all Treks are English threaded) Shimano UN53 bottom bracket with a 107mm spindle length. I tossed the old SR cranks in my parts bin and used some cheap Sugino RD cranks I picked up at a bike swap for $5. The bottom bracket shell length is 68, in case you don't already know that.
