jpdesjar 03-31-08 12:31 PM

just a few close calls for me...never hit by a car and never crashed into one, not yet anyway
i also dont bike into town very much, my route to work opens up pretty well...i always watch out for the people on phones or the ones eating big macs off themselves

;)

Score: Me 3, Cars 1

I have slammed into the back end of three cars (two in traffic, one parked) and have been hit by one car. I did not fall the time I got hit. I fell every time I hit a car. Never got really hurt but forks and front wheels came and went back then.

Last car-bike contact: 1988. Glad that's over.

about 3 weeks ago, i went down on my road bike doing about 38mph in a bit of gravel. shattered my collar bone and banged up my elbow pretty good. some nice rash on my left leg and arm, but nothing to major. I'm off bikes on the road for another 3 weeks at least. i walked w/ a limp for about a week and a half cause apparently i hammered my knee pretty good too. now my arm and leg get really stiff and sore periodically, but i think it'll go away pretty soon.

curbtender 04-09-08 09:45 PM

I flew away from this one. Rear-ended by A distracted Mercedes Benz driver doing 45 mph. Launched me in a cartwheel and landed flat on my back. At least he stopped.

nope i didn't walk away, 2 1/2 days in hospital, 20+ stiches on face.

no memory of what happened

BUT

i was told i hit a rock

i still think someone ran in front of me

no damage whatsoever on arms or shoulders.

this was last july. pretty much healed up, except for the scar around eye. which is pretty awesome.

oh yes, and always wear protection

enjoy

SHOwned 04-09-08 09:49 PM

^^way to lead with your face. j/k at least you aren't totally brain dead.

nathbdp 04-09-08 09:51 PM

no only partially, but it was only slightly better before... :P

My only car crash was when I rear ended a car that stopped short because of a passing ambulance. I wasn't going too fast, but I still went over the handlebars and took out one of his tail lights. Both the bike (rigid giant mtb) and I came out just fine.

TimArchy 04-10-08 12:59 AM

How about the tale that cyclists generally crash more on their left side than right?

Both times I was hit by vehicles (walked away from one, not the other), most of the damage was on my left side. And it seems like in other crashes I always tweak my left wrist.

The standing theory was (early in the century) that since the heart is on the left (obviously untrue), the left side of the body is heavier therefore we are more likely to fall that way.

Any other experiences?

I can guarantee that if I am hit by a car, and am still alive while the car is still there, that the car will have no windows, and possibly a dead driver.

Don't try skitching. I'm lucky I didn't get run over.

Typically (this applies mostly to my skateboarding days, but I have skitched a few trucks on my bike too), if you're not going as fast as the car, then you get pulled off. I just don't understand how you didn't realize and let go? It happens to me all the time that the person speeds up, but I just get my arm pulled back and then about half a second of minimal rebalancing to do, and then I am fine. Did your hand get caught?

I speculate that this might have something to do with laterality. Most cyclists are also left foot dominant/ regular footed skaters. It makes some sense that the majority of bodies would prefer to fly through the air left side first. I am a goofy footer and have broken my right collarbone and separated my right shoulder on two different crashes.

I got hit and run, and the way it played out, it really seemed like the guy intentionally hit me for ****s and giggles. If I had a plate number I'd have pressed attempted murder charges, or at least aggravated assault.

I got hit by a bus in august. I was knocked out for a bit, and have a separated shoulder, I have a nice little bone sticking up on my left shoulder. I also lost a pretty good chunk of my heal on the Changing. I said no I didn't walk away since I was out for a bit. Once I woke up every one was standing around me telling me not not move. I for some reason wanted to make sure I was still all there and stood up. Then sat down then took a car to the hospital!

If you ever really are hit by a car, you won't be as Bad ***** as you think you will be. You will be dazed, confused, not really know whats going on. You basically feel as thought your drunk with out any of the "self made drunk ego." Luckly right after your hit the pain is at the minimum! You will hurt much worse later! Right after i could move my arm all the way around with no increased level of pain. The next morning and for about 2 wheels after I could not move it but at the elbow!

gharding 04-10-08 10:19 AM

Hit by a car once (squeezed me into the curb. mirror sent me down. he kept on going)
Hit a car once (cab right-hooked me with no signaling. endo'd into traffic)
Clotheslined by cab-hailing old dude once (jumped out into traffic and did a nazi salute 2' in front of me. fell backwards off my bike)
Head-on collision with another biker once (their fault!)

Never had more than a scrape and a bruise, though.

griffin_ 04-10-08 10:36 AM

i've crashed tons of times but never with a car

[knock on wood]

This looks worse than it was.

powers2b 04-10-08 12:58 PM

Hit 4 times + too many self induced crashes to count.
I tried to ride down an UP escalator on the DC subway system and crashed for 26 minutes.
If you're not crashing, you're not trying.

Oh No 04-10-08 01:14 PM

only grazed the side of a car. never fell, but bruised myself pretty good.

barnzy 04-10-08 02:25 PM

Hit by car once, ran off road once, and ran into car once ...

Nothing to major had some bad bruising on my left hip and my knee had a wicked cut on it. It was the worst, as it healed and scabbed up, anytime i bent my knee it re-opened and leaked puss everywhere.

Retem 04-10-08 02:43 PM

Both I rode away from

one I was cut off by a truck turning right I bounced my face off the tailgate as I went down didn't even hurt myself at all just hurt my bike

two I hit three j-walkers when they ran out across the path of me and a car i was pacing knocked em down like bowling pins it was funny but it hurt shredded a new pair of full finger glove and mussed up my face a bit but I still rode home afterwards
