WW Langster build

This build was going to be a Fixed/SS project but the more I got into it the more I wanted it to be just a fixed gear bike. The gearing is 42X16 for now and this seems to be fine on the first ride but with his at close to 6-8% around my area, I do not think going bigger upfront is wise at this time for me.

I just have to sort out what bars I am going to be using. I am thinking the Profile Cobra Base bar, F119 Ti bolts and New 31.8 brake lever.

I have to shorten up this area but will do so when I sort out the bars and I have to find a carbon conical spacer.

Will have to see how the carbon spiderless chainring holds up on a Fixed gear build. I will use my brake a lot to save the ring.

Very nice. Damn dude, do you have an endless resource of cash? How much have these 2 WW build cost you? You're bringing back my WW inch.

The cog is a Dura-Ace 16T track cog and not carbon.

uh, i think they like it. i may be wrong, but the saying usually goes "you can't polish a turd." by taking a generally un-appreciated bike and making it an incredible machine, you have done the inverse: polished a turd.

bdc88 04-12-08 09:38 PM

That may be the case but I was warned by a fellow WW that there might be a few that thought WHAT THE HELL AND WHY. To that I do say to each their own but if they are saying what you are suggesting then thank you.

roderage 04-12-08 09:47 PM

is the chainring top secret?

HA HA. Not at all. Just email Fibre-Lyte and they will make you one.

holy **** i just realized WW stood for Weight Weenie. For some reason i was thinking it was the name of your shop or something. wow.

of course there are gonna be people who think it's pointless. screw 'em!

i do have a question though. you mentioned in the thread for the other bike about getting lighter hardware for the surly singulator. when you've got a bike built and it's already WW status, does shaving a few grams here and there make a noticeable difference, or is it more about completing the package?

Indeed that is what I meant.

Getting the bikes down this low does make a noticeable difference from where I started but the last few grams is all about completing the package. I just look at things and think "I could save a bit more here and there" It is a fun hobby to go along with a great sport and I just love to ride bikes. Always have. I think I get this from my father who builds hotrods. He was always upgrading things so I started to do the same when I got my first BMX back in 1980. I was drilling out my brake levers and removing the additional secon lever on my old Apollo Sport 10 back in 1985 to make it lighter back then. I just have always had the bug.

If you are worried about weight and durability for a titanium chainring. The carbon isn't going to last long.

anomaly 04-13-08 11:45 AM

Also why do you WW people weigh a bike that isn't rideable...pedals

Aren't those Speedplays?

bdc88 04-13-08 08:33 PM

Someone had asked for the build list and weights but I could not find them in the book that I keep so I did what most would not do and took the bike apart this afternoon. It is great to know that my two scales are calibrated as I weighed all of the parts today on my counter top scale and then the complete bike on the Alpine. Since the Alpine rounds up, it reads 6000g but in pounds reads 13.22 which is actually 5998g. I was able to take apart the bike and put it back together in less than an hour to get the weight.

I also took it for an hour ride tonight after putting it back together and it ran perfect. The chainline is close but not perfect but while riding it does not make a sound. I am very happy with the build and the carbon spiderless chainring worked great. I did use the front brake more than I normally would but brake pads are cheaper to replace than the ring.

Speedplay X2's in the picture and installed for the weigh in.

bonechilling 04-13-08 08:41 PM

You know, the cheapest way you could save 50 grams is moving from those Speedplay X2s to the Xs.

Not the cheapest way but I could drop a bit more weight by changing to the X-1's. I might actually do that on my other builds. I was able to get some aluminum butterflies that were anodized black to drop the weight on the X-2's to around 176g and it was still cheaper than buying the X-1's.

I think everyone thinks that I am made of money or something but honestly, I have been buying these parts for the good part of three years and keep upgrading different bikes to get where I am today and selling off the old stuff to keep the costs down. I have been able to get amazing deals on every single part including the carbon bits. I think people would be very surprise at what I have actually paid for these builds.
