Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

to start with maybe don't put oury grips on drop handlebars. they sell crazy rolls (made of different materials. ie cork, cloth, leather, synthetic materials...)that you can wrap around the handlebars. it's amazing they provide a good solid gripping surface and allow for various hand positions on drops. Much cooler/ hipper than oury's

Champ grips work well too, and they come in hipster pleasing colors:

just buy a custom bike already built. you are going to piece this thing together and it will look like it. please save starving children in africa before you put areospokes on your bike. i just saw my first areospoke in montana the other day...if the craze has finally hit here it is close to being over.

The most important question is can you do bar spinz and how do TT pad's and Knog Frog's look with it? thats why you ride a bike right?

i do a short commute to work everyday, do all my shopping and what not at college on it and just take random rides everyday for the fun of riding/escaping the indoors. aerodynamics obviously aren't a big deal. as far as fit/comfort go, i'm pretty sure anything's an improvement of what i have.

the idea of the bike is to be kinda outlandish in and of itself. as i stated, most of the choices are aesthetic. i might even post my own bike in the jackasposeur rather than in the regular picture link.

i guess more than anything, after looking through all the pages and pictures, i've found most of the stuff i like, and i just wanted suggestions for the things i haven't found yet. it's no coincedence that the parts that i don't particularly think "look cool" are the ones i'm asking for help on. i'll be the first (well actually like the 20th) person to call myself out on it being pretty effing ridiculous, but i'm not going for a "classy" bike.

if i were to have a much better frame would that have changed everything? i'm a bigger fan of beefy looking aluminum frames then smaller steel ones, and out of the ones i've seen, i like the concept the best.

but anyways, i'm not oblivious to how silly it all sounds, but i partly want this to be a learning experience and i partly want to make a crazy overdone but still functional bike

Maybe wear out the stock parts, by riding ALOT BEFORE you buy all the bling. Then you might have a clue as to why you are buying such gear. Oh this gave me a headache.

pedals: i need recommendations for some low profile pedals
toe straps: toshi double toe straps
wheels: aerospoke front and back
seatpost: no clue

here's my advice, based on you having money issues and no LBS and not riding that many miles:

keep the frame (hopefully it fits you)
do not buy a chris king headset. get a cheap tange or something (you'll need a 1" threaded headset)
stem: cheap SR
handlebars: cheap generic road drops
cranks: sugino rd's
matching bottom bracket. you seriously do not need a stainless bottom bracket
pedals: mks gr9's, steel or plastic clips and single nylon straps
wheels: basically anything from here: https://shop.greatdealsonbikes.com/me...tegory_Code=TR
seatpost: one that's cheap and fits (you'll need to know the seatpost diameter of the frame)

OR just buy a kiloTT complete from bikesdirect.

seriously though, with all that money laying around just get a kilo tt or a motobecane.
i mean with no LBS around you might even have trouble assembling all that good stuff.
just get the kilo and start swapping when you feel like you need better stuff. i think it's a way better idea.

you're taking this in good humor OP. yes, we are busting your chops, but we all bust everyone's chops, no matter what. yeah, it seems like you're putting the cart before the horse right now, but it's your bike and your $$$, so really do what you want. but delicious and traffic jammer (jesus murphy!) have offered the best advice so far.

spooki, if you want a restoration thread, go for it. those are always fun to read. but mine's gonna stay in C&V.

it's been said already but I'll say it again... the motobecane or kilo or whatnot are fine if you want to be able to mount a rack, etc... just don't go blowing money throwing expensive parts on a serviceable but unexciting frame.

Even after jamming for 20odd years, I'm looking at maybe 200bones for my Steel Wool hubs for my wheel build, I can't justify the blingy gear vs. $$$, but that's me.

get a kilo tt and then upgrade it as you go. This build is a waste of money.

9 years old? to some, it's obsolete, so that may work. mostly "v" but i doubt it's "c" yet.

Hmmm... that headset's worth about as much as that frame. Do you know what both of these items functions are? We're talkin' priorities here.
