interesting. Did he mention this in one of the posts over in road? I try to keep up with them but so many of his posts are just him defending the company or answering headset questions.

Surly crosscheck rocks the kogswell... more interested in a carbon track frame. They make cheap carbon road frames, just a matter of the mold.

Well, it's 650b, so for fixed you'd pretty much have to build a custom wheelset, good excuse for an eno.

i'm in on the PR, But what kind of scratch$$$ are we talking about?

deadforkinglast 05-01-08 12:29 AM

Unless that PR is pretty cheap, I'm still more interested in a cross frame, SS or geared. Touring still isn't trendy (and probably never will be, unfortunately), so I can still find nice used touring framesets on ebay for not too much.

well for me at least, with the P/R is the ''P'' (porteur) part of it that's really interesting, be able to carry load up-front: the ultimate grocery-getter.

retail on the P/R is $600 plus shipping

for that you get frame, fork, headset, seatpost and fenders

it would be a lot easier to set a price once I know what you all expect to be in the box when it arrives

what's been the discount of the IRO group buys? if a Rob Roy retails for $299, what is the group buy price?

barba 05-01-08 01:14 PM

$150 for the Mark V with different steel.

mihlbach 05-01-08 01:28 PM

$160 for the Rob Roy, with the same tubing (as far as I know), but a few different colors.

SeanBonham 05-01-08 01:32 PM

what about an Affinity Cycles pursuit frame GB?

So if a Rob Roy has a MSRP of $299, then the group buy price roughly half.

For frame/fork/HS/seatpost/fenders, I'd have to get close to $320 or suffer by comparison.

That's a maybe.

The value that Tony derives from selling frames so cheap comes from a couple of places: selling match group build kits and larger orders that get -priority- in the production queue.

$320 is a great value, and even with a somewhat higher cost several people will undoubtedly jump at it. But good luck getting 100+ ssfg cheapskates to sign up for a $320 (or more) utilitarian bike with little wheels. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't think you'll get the numbers. A cookie cutter cheap steel track frame sold at a rock bottom price will always attract more in this crowd.

mattface 05-01-08 02:35 PM

I have to say the PR is a little out of my price range at it's regular price, but for $320 I might just do it. I also think you're likely to get a lot of orders at that price, though not nearly so many as Tony got for $160. that's sorta like within impulse buy range for some of the people on here. Then again the PR ir quite unique. Most of us already HAVE track bikes like the original IRO group buy, and for them that wants em inexpensive SS cyclocross frames are pretty easy to find, but it seems to me that a lot of folks are in the same boat I am with the PR. We covet it, but we can't quite afford it (or justify the expense) but we can't find a very good alternative.

I've been surprised by the response to learn how many others are thinking like me. So why don't you figure out what the minimum number you need to sell to be able to sell them at that price, what options you can offer i.e. color choices, build kits and what have you. I'm going to guess you'll be able to sell a lot of 650b wheels and/or rims out of this deal. Then let us know what kind of numbers you need committed and what you need for a deposit and lets see if we can make this bird fly.

On the Iro buy that I observed he needed a certain number of deposits before the cut-off date or he would refund the deposits and not do the order, and as I recall he got WAY more than the minimum number of orders.

mattface 05-01-08 02:38 PM

Another suggestion. If we make this PR order work I'll bet dollars to donuts that Lane would be hip to doing a group buy on a custom run of color matched Cetma racks.

The crosscheck is a cross bike. The Long Haul Trucker, their touring bike, is closer to the Kogswell. The smaller sizes even come with 26-inch wheels (not 650b, but not 700c, either).

But **** Surly.

I dont think that it would be impossible. The logistics of it would be to get someone to buy a bunch of frames in sizes etc. and stockpile them until we had a container full of stuff, and then mail em in a shipping container, and then have someone pick up and ship the individual frames. The kazane buy could be really cool as well, I like that idea.

How about the Ocean frames, they ride nice and the craftsmanship is damn good too. I do like the Panasonic group buy as well.

Nice.

I really like the P/R, but I'm apprehensive about the 650B wheels. I was in on the first IRO group buy, and I would definitely consider getting in on one for the Kogswell.

Here is a site dedicated to the sixfiftyB.
