i hope they stuck it to the man

and by man, i mean people trying to go home to their familes after a long hard day of work. people trying to pick up their kids from school, or to just go home and enjoy dinner.

selfish idiots. this goes beyond protest, this is an act of stupidity. yea, i get the point of a CM ride, to alert drivers of bikers as traffic. but bikes dont belong on the ****ing freeway.
and i've seen the other freeway rides. i get the point of it, weaving past cars going 10mph. yea, it's funny to be sitting in your car in traffic and kids whiz past you on bicycles. i get that. but to intentionally add to delay? dont say it wasn't intentional. common sense says it would have ended that way.

I love the original concept of Critical Mass but I think the execution of it has failed. They aren't building awareness what so ever, they are just making motorists more pissed at cyclists. Personally I think CM is making it worse for us. To intentionally cause traffic to make a point is just counter productive. I also think part of the problem are the cyclists themselves. I'm a motorist as well as a cyclist and when I'm driving I always look out for people on bikes since I know how it feels to be out there. But a lot of times, especially here in NYC, bike riders just ignore the rules of the road and deliberately out themselves in bad situations. You know how many times some dude cuts me off on his bike and I almost nail him? Granted, a lot of motorists are nuts and could careless about people on bikes and this is the main issue, but if we want things to change the bikers have to start with themselves.

CM is just making this worse. At least that's how I see it.

that's what i'm saying. critical mass is okay when they obey the laws and flow with traffic, not hold it up. that "corking" **** isn't helpful. i'm more of a motorist because my work is 30 minutes away and my school is 45 minutes away. i look out for bikers too but i'm not in a city that has alot of bike traffic.

and yea, i'm just pissed that they'd bring their kids on a bike ride in the middle of the freeway. sometimes i use swear words on the internet to convey anger. it's the internet, not a job interview.

i agree with you though. acts like these are counter productive. raising your bike above your head and charging at police is counter productive. they took a good idea and ****ed it up. pardon my french. stealing the road isn't the same as sharing the road.

oh okay. yea, the article is all sorts of ****ed up.

About 200 cyclists, some riding with children, shut down the westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway last night in what police called a dangerous stunt.
most of whom were wearing helmets
Four cyclists who refused to leave the highway were arrested and charged under the Provincial Offences Act with cycling on a highway.
Redden said some of the cyclists dismounted their bikes, thrust them above their heads and ran at the officers. (THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAA!)

right. because, throughout history meaningful social change has only ever been accomplished by people doing exactly what they were told and obeying all the laws. protest is the most effective when done far away from anyone it could possibly inconvenience where it is easily ignored or marginalized.

I wish the police would cite every single one of them for Impeding the Flow of Traffic. I'm all for sharing the road, but i'm all against purposely holding bigger and more importantly FASTER vehicles up because you want to be a ******bag.

One of these days a maniac is going to get fed up with it and just plow through a row of cyclists. Its too late to ask yourself if its more important to be right than to be alive when you're in a hospital broken.

CriticalMass jumped the shark at the RNC in '04. Since then they've been an embarrassment in search of a reason to protest.

One of these days a maniac like me is going to get fed up with it and just plow through a row of cyclists. i would really enjoy that. It will be too late then to ask yourself if its more important to be right than to be alive when you're in a hospital broken and your family is grieving. By then i will have laughed and laughed at your pain because I believe bicycles can never be used for transportation and will soon give up my bicycle and drive everywhere i go. Just like my daddy and his daddy before him. I'm a posenger hipster today but when I turn 18 I get my redneck and a truck. LONG LIVE BUSH LONG LIVE BUSH

Toronto Police deny witnessing anything like that and acknowledge no charges were laid for such activity as none was witnessed. they took a good idea and ****ed it up according to a line of bull**** i swallowed like candy. pardon me I hate the french. Stealing the road isn't the same as sharing the road, but where I live I ride mostly on the sidewalk out of fear. The sidewalks are clear because everyone drives and no one walks so problem solved. roads are for cars dude and when I am old enough I will only drive. Sidewalks rule

Inadequate funding for bicycle programs in Toronto? The lack of a bike path along Bloor? The lack of a meaningful bike path infrastructure anywhere in the city? Congestion caused by a sub-par transit system more interested in turning a profit than providing a public service? ****ty bike locks all over the city that are easily circumvented with a 2x4 which the city acknowledged years ago but has not replaced? People in cars who think they own the road and that we "belong on the sidewalk?"

Or, in this specific instance, a big, infested, oozing scar on the face of our city?

When it comes to bicycles in Toronto, there isn't a hell of a lot to not protest.

selfish idiots should just accept autocentric society. this goes beyond protest, this is an act of stupidity. yea, i get the point of a CM ride, to alert drivers of bikers as traffic. but bikes dont belong on the ****ing freeway. What i don't understand is how a protest can draw attention to a movement by drawing outside the lines and getting front page coverage. Didn't they know rednecks in development like me would not understand and get angry even fearful because I don't understand?
and i've seen the other freeway rides on tv from other places because here there is no question, bikes belong on the sidewalk. i get the point of it, weaving past cars going 10mph. yea, the point it that it's funny to be sitting in your car in traffic, something i will waste a big portion of life doing and see kids whiz past you on bicycles. i get that, it means bicycles are for kids and i'm a kid, but when i grow up i should give up on bikes because cars are for grownups once you turn 15. but to intentionally add to delay thereby pointing out the flawed system of transportation that has destroyed all of harris county and caused my mom and dad to swell up like ****in walruses? dont say it wasn't intentional, mom likes candy and dad eats when he's sitting in gridlock. common sense says this system is flawed but we don't havea lot of that here. If i had a rifle on that freeway it would have ended that way.

If you knew anything about the 'freeway' in question, you would also know that at that time of day, the bikes were traveling faster than any cars probably were on that section. It's little more than a parking lot most of the day.

Guys I'm looking out my window at the Gardiner right now, and there are literally nothing but bicycles in each direction as far as the eye can see!

We did it! I don't know how but we ****ing did it! The freeway is ours! The cars have been vanquished, and we reign supreme!

I knew this day would come, the dawning of a New Age. Oh, how I dreamed that it would be in my lifetime. But so soon? No, I dared not to even dream.

Rise up, brothers and sisters, rise up! Our time is come!!!

Cars are a necessity? Really? Its the industries fault? Stop buying into their bull****, and they'll change the system.

Its this kind of bull**** attitude that bothers me.

essentially things are the same everywhere. if bikes are toys to me here then it must be the same there. i learned that on the internet, the internet recommended a crappy bikesdirect bike and said it was a cheap way to try and look cool, but they didnt tell me nothing makes a fat white boy look cool so i'm going to sue and start driving everywhere even for pleasure. it's easier than pedaling and i cacn go through drivethroughs
