Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

No one has anything in stock

I'm in the DC Metro, and went to and called just about every bike store in VA and MD. Spokes had a steamroller and HTO had the Felt Dispatch and a Rock Mountain Boroughs, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with a Raleigh One Way, but would really like to ride it first. Spokes looked to see if they could order it, but it looks like Raleigh is out of the 08's. I'm trying to avoid buying in DC because of the 10% tax, and none of the dealers in DC have Raleigh anyway. So what are my options? I guess I could keep looking for a used one way, or maybe go with an IRO.

I just assumed there would be more stock of single speeds. One place I went to is a Cannondale dealer, I wanted to check out the Capo, and the guy working there didn't even know what it was.

How does the IRO Rob Roy compare to the One Way? I know it lacks fenders and comes with smaller tires, I also really like the color of the Raleigh. This sucks.

FWIW, my Rob Roy is a wonderful ride. I like it even better than some of my boutique frames.

there is a brand new capo at light street in bmore, and a gary fisher. broadway always has a pista or two and a san jose, and sometimes a masi. i THINK i've seen a T1 at joe's.

haven't seen any raleigh's here, but point is there are still a lot of SS/track bikes here in baltimore.

I just built one on the website for 699, I added the Chris King headset. Anyone have any pics of the green frame? The hub is free, will Tony put a flip-flop on there?

I'm just going to chime in and say the Felt Dispatch is a great ss bike. It doesn't have that aggressive track geometry, and the freewheel is a bit cheap, but its amazingly confortable to ride and responds great

I looked at the Felt, and agree it was pretty nice. Not sure if I want aluminum though. Also, another thing I have noticed, there seems to be two types of off the shelf fixed gear/single speeds (aside from track vs. road geometry.) Some, like the Felt or the Capo, seem to me to be very similar to many typical geared road bikes, by that I mean they remind me of just about every low to mid range road bike but are either fixed or have one gear, nice and shiny, etc. The other type, the steamroller, the 2 raleighs, salsa casseroll, etc. seem to have a different, maybe vintage look. Maybe its the aluminum, maybe I like the latter much better. I also think a solid color frame with all silver components is tough to beat in the looks department.

There are multiple Somas, Pakes, and maybe even a Surly or two at Silver Cycles in Silver Spring MD. Not a ton of selection but not bad if you're just looking.

The Bicycle Escape

in Frederick MD 301-663-0007 usually has something in stock, I know they have a Langster, Pake, some custom Yipsan's, don't know what else currently. I just had them order a Masi Commuter, had it in a week. The Masi Fixed will be in stock mid/end of month. The other place you can try is Race Pace (Ellicott City & Columbia) usually have Steamrollers.
