Hipsters...
So as a balding middle-aged fixed-gear rider, I never really understood the proper definition of "hipster" as is so frequently used in this forum.
And then last week...it happened to me. I saw these two guys with heavy tatoos, stringy hair, no helmet, platform pedals and flat bars. Hit me like a ton of bricks "so that's what they're talking about" Am I close? [by the way...no judgement here, except for the lack of helmet] |
nah not really

none of them look like hipsters at all. failthread.
|
I've always wanted to cut off branches on a tree like that to get bikes. Apparently they don't lock them to the tree though, so that would be unnecessary.
The only one in question would be the one with the black cycling cap, but he's not even sporting cut-offs. I would say they fit into the 'uber-fixed scene' well enough though. |
Come to SF... we're infested with them. In all fairness some of my best friends are hipsters. I'm more crosstrash/singlespeedscum, but I race track, so go figure. I also don't wear women's jeans, and 80s shirts.

yeah cuz all skinny jeans are womens jeans
|
It's been done to death, but it bears repeating:

I believe it's just a word people use in order to avoid being classified. I think the idea is, "whatever a hipster is, I'm not it..." But the definition is left purposely vague so that it can always be molded to each person's needed use.

Wiki has the answer but i didn't see aerospoke in there

How old is middle-aged? I am 36 and ride a GT track with gold deep-Vs, which is probably the picture-definition of a hipster track bike. I always think of middle-aged as being in your 40s, is that right?
|
I don't think most of the people here really know what a hipster is.
Trust me, a tattooed guy in cut-off shorts and a cycling cap on a fixed-gear is not a hipster. Not even close. |
I plan to live past 100 so don't consider being 42 to be middle aged and whatever a hipster is, I ain't it.
I just finished building up my new rear wheel with a 36/4 on a Formula hub and a Vuelta Tempest to match my front wheel (which needs a high flange hub now). This is what the anti-hipster rides even if he's not sure what defines a hipster... http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...wievuelta1.jpg |
one less car sticker = hipster :)
|
I am here to invalidate this thread.

hipsters wear every colour in the spectrum with every print imaginable and claim it doesnt clash.
having said that, they arnt that bad. but then again everyone on this site hates everyone else so i know someone is going to hate me for poking fun at hipsters, while another person will hate me for saying i am friends with some. lame. |

Exactly. So everyone's definition will be different.

Yeah, it's all good fun. On that day, I'd just finished a 40 mile road ride, came home, got message about alleycat ride, hopped on the San Jose and got there for the start. Won it, too.

Hipsters are the worst! Ugh! With their clothes and their music and their bikes! The worst! Who do they think they are??
