I got a new black B-17 in the mail a couple days ago, and just finished proofhiding it. how worried should i be about the dye rubbing off on my pants?

Bikes: 70s Leader Precision w/Shimano 600 (road), IRO Rob Roy (Fixed)

Follow the care instructions for your Brooks. Proofide it and leave the damn thing alone for 24 hours, buff the surface and if you feel like, apply another coat - or just ride. The Proofide is akin to shoe polish for leather shoes. You're applying a protective coating to the leather to keep water out, keep the leather 'healthy' and supple enough to break in, but not sag and not dry out. Treat it properly and don't try to rush things. It has to soak into the leather, so leave it be for a bit.

Bikes: Check the sig to find out

just try and wear darker pants. It can leave a little bit of a darker area on your pants if they are light colored.

Jeans especially are meant to get dirty, who cares. Thats why we have washers and dryers, not to mention the neighborhood cleaner. If you are really concerned about the well being of your jeans wear some rags till your seat gets broken in, it's that simple. For me, not at all. Nothing. I waited 24 hours after PH application.

Actually they've been around for a hundred years precisely because it's not a PITA.

Are you wearing tight white jeans? Good, then you are fine.

If you are wearing tight white jeans, you have bigger problems than the dye from the saddle coming off and onto your clothes.

I donno. If you ride enough, the oil from you skin/butt-sweat kind of does this job for you.

Was told this by an old-timer that has been biking for primary mode of transit for like 50 years.

He is overweight, pulls centuries like nobody's bidness, drinks beer like water, and occasionally takes the motorcycle (old 1970's race bike) on a 180mph spin.

If he told me the world was flat, I would believe it

Treat it, don't treat it, it's none of my business. But, why would you take such a risk with such an awesome saddle? I use Lexol to treat it, keeps her nice and soft. A $12 bottle will last a few years.

And I have some doubts about the butt sweat thing. It's more salty water than oil. Salt + Water + leather = Cracked and dry leather.

Mr. Wizard told this to me himself. Then he showed my how to make silly putty.
